The machinery is cranking up at the Times Free Press and you're going to see some changes over the next few months. Temporary, but ones you'll definitely notice.
Some sections will be smaller in width and height on some days; color photos may not show up in some sections; and borders, margins and spacing could change from day to day.
But it's all for the better.
We are installing new printing presses at the Times Free Press, multimillion-dollar presses that will give us more options for the newspaper. We'll be able to print color photos on almost every page. We'll have more choices for how we design the paper. Like a well-trained athlete, we'll be quicker on our feet, able to make the paper more vibrant and exciting.
But it's not going to be easy, it's not going to be quick, and it's not always going to be pretty. We're asking you to be patient because we know the end result will be worth the rough patches.
Nothing will change as far as our content. We'll still provide you with the most comprehensive coverage of Chattanooga and our region as well as national and international news. We'll still pack the paper with local stories that will inform, interest and engage you. News, sports, business, lifestyle, entertainment and editorials will all be covered the same as we have always done.
But to install a new press while printing on an existing press is extremely challenging. With so many moving parts -- literally and figuratively -- our readers have to be prepared to expect the unexpected.
We're constantly tweaking things at the Times Free Press, trying to figure out what's working, what's not, asking ourselves: "What can we do better?" The new presses will help us be better, help us produce a paper that you'll enjoy reading.
Statesman Adlai Stevenson summed it up pretty well when he said: "Change is inevitable. Change for the better is a full-time job."
At the Times Free Press, we understand that our full-time job is 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. We're just trying to do it better.
