House fire kills 4 in Carthage, more injured

CARTHAGE, Tenn. - A fire in a home in Carthage has killed four people and injured five others.

Fire officials say the blaze started at around 11:40 p.m. Saturday night, and emergency crews showed up shortly after.

Carthage Fire Chief Joe Hiett tells WSMV-TV in Nashville that flames were burning through the roof when emergency officials arrived.

Hiett says two adults and two children were killed in the fire. Two of the injured were flown to Vanderbilt Medical Center.

WKRN-TV reports that two people were released from a hospital Sunday morning. One firefighter was also taken to the hospital after a brick wall collapse, but the injuries weren't serious.

Hiett says the fire likely started in the basement or the back of the house. Officials have not determined the cause.
