No charges filed in fatal police-involved shooting in Macon, Ga.

MACON, Ga. - The Bibb County District Attorney has announced a Macon police officer will not be charged in a man's shooting death.

District Attorney David Cooke today said the late December shooting of 49-year-old Sammie Davis Jr. in a Kroger parking lot was justified because the officer feared for his life.

Authorities say Davis assaulted the officer when he tried questioning him, and used his fingernails to cut the officer's neck. Cooke says the officer thought Davis had a knife and shot him three times in the chest.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation began probing the shooting in January and passed results of their investigation along to the District Attorney's office last month.

The officer has been on paid administrative leave since the shooting.
