MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A former prison supervisor has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for fatally beating an inmate.
U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson imposed the sentence today for former lieutenant Michael Smith for the August 2010 death of Rocrast Mack.
Smith was convicted of violating Mack's constitutional rights, conspiracy and obstruction of justice. Three former prison employees got lesser sentences for participating in hitting Mack or covering up what happened.
Matthew Davidson got a seven-year sentence. Scottie Glenn and Joseph Sanders got five years.
Glenn and Davison pleaded guilty to violating Mack's rights and conspiracy. Sanders pleaded guilty to obstructing justice.
Smith, Glenn and Davidson face a restitution hearing later. Smith will go to prison immediately. The other defendants report to prison Jan. 6.
