A fire at the Jaycee Towers in the Golden Gateway downtown today resulted in one person being injured and four others being forced from their residences there.

The Chattanooga Fire Department said the fire occurred in an apartment on the fifth floor of the high-rise complex at 500 W. Martin Luther King Blvd.

The victim of the fire was a 63-year-old man who suffered burns and smoke inhalation, the Chattanooga Fire Department reported. He was taken to Erlanger Medical Center and his condition is currently not know.

The fire was actually extinguished by a sprinkler that was activated, but the apartment was filled with thick, black smoke.

Water from the sprinkler damaged other apartments, displacing their residents.

The fire department said the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
