The structure is named after former student Tucker Hunt.Students, staff and faculty of St. Peter's Episcopal School on Friday celebrated the opening of Tucker's Tipi, a 25-foot high, 22-foot diameter outdoor learning environment on the school's Ashland Terrace campus.
The celebration, organized and presented by the Council for Native American Preservation, focused on the cultural richness associated with Native American life, according to a news release from the school.
Tucker's Tipi is named for Tucker Hunt, a 2009 St. Peter's graduate who died at the age of 13. He was a Baylor School student at the time of his death.
As part of the event, which included drumming, singing, and dancing, students and others were treated to a presentation from Steven "Snow Bear" Taylor , an environmental educator and practitioner of primitive living skills who has been sharing his experiences for more than 40 years, the school's news release stated.
Taylor is widely regarded for his interpretive naturalist walks, living history programs, and his musical and storytelling performances, the release stated.
He has learned about Native American ways of life from elders of the Cherokee, Seminole, Creek and Lakota peoples.
