Woman charged after gun, drugs found in car outside Jackson County Jail

Jackson County Sheriff's Office officials say 32-year-old Amanda Kaye Smith, of Dutton, Ala., had marijuana and a small handgun in her car when they arrested her.

And her car was in the parking lot of the Jackson County Jail at the time.

According to a news release, Smith happened to be dropping off property at the jail for an inmate while members of a local family career leader group were touring Jackson County Jail.

Luke the K-9 unit, a member of the Jackson County Sheriff's Narcotics Unit, was part of the tour.

While Smith was reportedly in the jail lobby, Luke "alerted" on her vehicle, prompting narcotics investigators to take a closer look. Inside, they reportedly found "a small amount of marijuana inside a pipe and a small-caliber handgun."

Smith was arrested inside the jail and booked on unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. Her bond was set at $500.
