Bongo, an antelope species, escapes from Atlanta zoo pen

ATLANTA - Zoo Atlanta is investigating how a bongo known as Tambo escaped its pen.

Zoo officials say the bongo - a species of antelope - "briefly left his habitat" Wednesday afternoon.

Zoo officials tell WSB-TV that the escape caused no harm to Zoo Atlanta guests, staff or the animal, and the situation was safely resolved. They say that veterinarians were able to safely tranquilize Tambo and return him to his holding area, where he is recovering normally.

The zoo was temporarily closed during the incident, and zoo guests were escorted to the nearest buildings as a safety precaution.

Eastern bongos are a critically endangered antelope species found in eastern Africa.
