KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Knoxville officials have agreed to pay $200,000 to a homeless man beaten by police officers.
The Knoxville News Sentinel reports city officials reached the out-of-court settlement this month with Michael Allen Mallicoat.
Mallicoat had not filed a lawsuit against the city, and the settlement avoids one. As part of the agreement, Mallicoat relinquished any claim against the city or the police department.
Three former Knoxville police officers pleaded guilty last year to beating Mallicoat, who suffered broken ribs and was hospitalized.
The officers resigned after being removed from patrol duties and were sentenced in August to a year of supervised probation.
