Four UGA football players arrested Monday night

Four University of Georgia football players, including starting safety Tray Matthews, were arrested Monday night in Athens and charged with multiple counts of theft by deception.

Defensive linemen James DeLoach and Jonathan Taylor and receiver Uriah LeMay, the younger brother of former Bulldogs quarterback Christian LeMay, also were charged. According to the Athens-Clarke County jail booking report, LeMay is facing four misdemeanor counts, Matthews three, with DeLoach and Taylor each facing two.

The arrests occur as the Bulldogs are set to open spring practice this afternoon. Coach Mark Richt is scheduled to meet with the media after the workout but did release a statement this morning.

"I'm aware of the situation, and it will be handled in an appropriate way," Richt said.

Last month, Richt announced that another starting safety, Josh Harvey-Clemons, had been dismissed from the program for a violation of team rules.

Matthews was limited to eight games last season due to a nagging hamstring injury but managed to compile 36 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and one interception. Taylor had nine tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack in 10 games, while DeLoach had four tackles in five games.

According to the jail report, LeMay was released late Monday night on bonds totaling $6,000. Matthews was released on $4,500, while DeLoach and Taylor were each released on $3,000.
