Shooting suspect in critical condition

A Calhoun, Ga., man who faces charges involving the abduction and shooting death of his estranged girlfriend is still in critical condition after being shot by police Thursday night.

Police say Paul Buchannon, 36, is recovering from gunshot wounds in an intensive care unit at Erlanger hospital. He is being guarded by several officers.

Buchannon faces charges of murder, kidnapping, aggravated assault and firearms violations in connection with the death of Christy McKnight.

On Thursday night, police followed leads from McKnight's home off U.S. Highway 41 where two teenagers, including her son, were shot to railroad tracks near Hill City, where McKnight's body was found, Gordon County Sheriff Mitch Ralston said.

When police found Buchannon several hours later in the woods, he was shot by two officers after refusing to lower his weapon, Ralston said.

The Whitfield County sheriff's deputy involved in the shooting is on administrative leave pending an investigation of the incident by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, said Whitfield Sheriff Scott Chitwood. The name of the officer is being withheld, he said.

Several charges are still expected against Buchannon, pending his release from Erlanger, said Gordon County Chief Deputy Robert Paris.

Services for McKnight, 40, of Calhoun, will be held today at 2 p.m. in the chapel at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home.

She is survived by her daughter, Angel Chattam, of Dalton, and two sons, Joe Roper, of Armuchee and Dustin Henderson, of Calhoun. Henderson, 17, was one of the teenagers shot Thursday night, but his wounds weren't life-threatening, police said.
