Agency will discuss Watts Bar construction

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission meets Monday in Athens, Tenn., to hear TVA's updated schedule details for construction on Watts Bar Nuclear Plant's new Unit 2 reactor in Spring City, Tenn.

The meeting will begin at noon EDT with a presentation by Tennessee Valley Authority officials, followed by discussions with the NRC staff.

After the business portion of the meeting, the public may ask questions and speak with the NRC staff.

The meeting will be at the Comfort Inn, 2811 Decatur Pike, in Athens.

Watts Bar Nuclear plant is near Spring City, about 50 miles northeast of Chattanooga.

TVA has been operating the Unit 1 reactor at Watts Bar since 1996, but suspended construction on Unit 2.

The utility decided in August 2007 to complete Unit 2, and in 2008 the NRC extended the construction permit for Unit 2.

Last week, the NRC authorized TVA to receive nuclear fuel for the new reactor.
