Drought hits Chattanooga, nearby areas

With summer's heat and a long stretch of dryness in recent months, it is not surprising that nine counties of Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia have been placed in the moderate drought category by the U.S. Drought Monitor.

Area counties that are now entirely or partly in the drought classification are Hamilton, Bradley, Marion and Sequatchie in Tennessee, and Catoosa, Dade, Murray, Walker and Whitfield in Georgia.

Chattanooga has had only one one-hundredth of an inch of rain since July 30!

Obviously no one likes drought. But we should count our blessings for the fact that in this area, the big Tennessee River provides us a plentiful supply of water for drinking, sanitation, energy generation, recreation and a host of other vital purposes.
