Southern Polytechnic State overcame a rally by the nationally sixth-ranked Lee University Lady Flames and won 70-69 in Southern States Athletic Conference basketball Saturday in Marietta, Ga. The Lee men, No. 2 in NAIA Division I, then beat the Hornets 82-73 behind 33 points and seven rebounds from Will Barnes.
SPSU (16-2, 9-2) moved past Lee (18-2, 8-2) into first place in the SSAC East on Arnissa Galloway's basket with five seconds left in the women's game, after the Lady Flames battled back from a 35-26 halftime deficit. Galloway had 23 points and 13 rebounds to go with Sarah Ogoke's 27 points and Ashlie Billingslea's seven assists and six steals for the Hornets.
Lee's Hollie German scored 28 points, Julia Zimmerman added 18 on 6-of-11 3-point shooting and Myriah Iles collected 11 rebounds. Supporting Barnes for the Flames (19-1, 10-1) were Steve Bennett with 14 points and eight rebounds, Jamorris Gaines with 12 points and Corey Billingsley with 11. De'Andre Blackmon had 19 points and 10 rebounds for SPSU.
• At Barbourville, Ky., the first-place Tennessee Wesleyan men's team extended its winning streak to nine games with a 97-78 Appalachian Athletic Conference win over Union College, after the second-place Wesleyan women won 67-32 over a third-place Union team missing key player Lindsey Waters. Cody Houck had 21 points with five 3s and 11 rebounds and Courtney Gobble hit nine of 10 free throws in scoring 16 points for the visiting Lady Bulldogs (12-8, 9-2).
Tyler Burse had 22 points and seven rebounds, E'Jay Ward delivered 11 assists and Josh Williams, Desmond Crisp and Zamarius McClendon scored 17, 16 and 15 points for the TWC men (16-7, 9-1), McClendon with eight rebounds and Shannon Smith with six assists.
• At Dayton, Bryan College's Jenna Ray had 21 points and nine rebounds and Morgan Burnette had 17 points, seven assists, six blocked shots, four steals and seven rebounds in a 75-57 AAC win over Columbia. The visitors got 21 and 13 points and 15 and 12 rebounds (nine offensive each) from Krystal Morissette and Nikki Craig.
• On Lookout Mountain, visiting Spelman edged Covenant's Lady Scots 63-60 in overtime in Great South play. Tiana Welch hit two free throws with 11 seconds left in the extra period for the final margin, giving her a team-high 13 points for Spelman (4-14, 2-3), which got 11 points and 12 rebounds from Shereva Lewis and eight steals from Christiauna Draper.
Haley Soles scored 15 points and Jessie Blankenship had 17 rebounds with 10 points for Covenant (7-8, 1-4), which committed 35 turnovers. Kiaira Cooper hit a layup to force overtime and got the Lady Scots within one with 49 seconds left in OT.
• At Tennessee Temple, the host Lady Crusaders improved to 8-13 with a 58-38 defeat of Bob Jones, and the Crusaders (10-11) completed the sweep with 14 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks from Rashaud Bell.
