Two-quarterback signings usually lead to transfers

In the SEC since 2004, signing two-quarterback classes typically meant attrition was ahead, and many such classes ended with transfers. Every multi-quarterback class in the SEC from 2004 to 2009 had one or more QB transfer, leave for disciplinary or academic reasons, not finish his senior year or change positions.

Here are some of the more memorable ones:

• The Vols signed Erik Ainge and Brent Schaeffer in 2004, and the duo shared playing time for most of their freshman seasons before both were injured. Schaeffer left the following April and resurfaced at Ole Miss in 2006. Michael Herrick, who signed with the Rebels the same year, transferred to Northern Arizona two years later.

• Florida's 2007 class featured John Brantley, Cam Newton and junior college quarterback Bryan Waggener. By the time Brantley took over for Tim Tebow in 2010, Newton was set to lead Auburn to the 2010 BCS national championship after a stop at a Texas junior college and Waggener had finished his career at Northern Colorado.

• Current LSU starter Zach Mettenberger signed with Georgia with Aaron Murray in 2009 and came to the Tigers in 2011 with Stephen Rivers, the brother of San Diego Chargers starter Philip Rivers, and Jerrard Randall, who decided this offseason to transfer.

• Alabama signed Blake Sims and Phillip Sims, now at Virginia, in 2010. Two years earlier, the Crimson Tide signed Star Jackson, who would transfer to Georgia State, and Brad Smelley, who became a successful and effective H-back.

• Jacoby Brissett transferred from Florida to North Carolina State this offseason after Jeff Driskel, his fellow 2011 signee, won the starting job.

• Arkansas signed two quarterbacks in both 2007 and 2008, which included Tyler Wilson, and one from each class eventually transferred to Central Arkansas.

• South Carolina signed Connor Shaw and Dylan Thompson in 2010, and Thompson played in 11 games as Shaw's backup in 2012.

• Ryan Mossakowski, who signed along with Morgan Newton in 2009, left Kentucky after one season and started six games at Lamar in 2012.

• A handful of other players, most notably Smelley, Florida's Trey Burton and LSU's Russell Shepard, signed as quarterbacks but ended up playing other positions.
