The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team opened its season Friday night by splitting two home matches. The Mocs beat Cumberland 42-3, then lost to nationally eighth-ranked Wisconsin 37-3.

UTC scored bonus points in seven of nine wins against Cumberland, including pins by Kevin Malone (285) and Levi Clemons (174). The Mocs also scored technical falls by freshmen Zach Bridson (125), Michael Hooker (149), sophomore Austin Sams (141) and senior Alex Hudson (157). Freshman Scottie Boykin (197) had a strong start to his collegiate career with a takedown at the buzzer for a 12-4 major decision over Scott Stewart.

The Mocs' only win in the Wisconsin match came at 165 pounds, where junior Corey Mock posted a 6-1 decision over Frank Cousins.

"The difference between good and great is winning those close matches," UTC coach Heath Eslinger said in a school release. "We were in six matches against a top-10 team. We have to find a way to win those close ones if we want to get to the next level."
