Wesleyan ends Dalton State's perfection

The Dalton State men's basketball team finally felt what it's like to lose Friday evening, falling 89-87 at Tennessee Wesleyan, which is ranked 20th in NAIA Division II.

Tyler Burse had 30 points and 12 rebounds and Dante Turnipseed had 20 points and eight assists for Wesleyan (2-1), which led by three at halftime, fell behind by 13 and won in the final seconds. Also for coach Mike Poe's Bulldogs, Andrew Scofield scored 14 points, Devante' Jenkins had 10 points and 11 rebounds and Shannon Smith had seven assists and four steals but 11 turnovers.

Tony Ingle's inaugural Roadrunners fell to 4-1 despite 21 points, eight rebounds and four assists from Preston Earle and 15 points and four steals by Ricky Sears. Dylan Smith added 14 points with 4-of-5 3-point shooting off the bench.

* Tennessee Temple 68, Lyon 58: At Batesville, Ark., Elliot Johnson scored 20 opints and Rashaud Bell had 14 points and eight rebounds as the Crusaders rose to 3-0.

* Bethel (w) 86, Bryan 65: At McKenzie, Tenn., the Lady Lions from NAIA Division II fell to the 16th-ranked NAIA Division I team despite 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting by Jenna Ray and 15 points and seven rebounds from Kristin Lane. Taylor Neuharth added 10 points. Porshia Blue led Bethel with 16.

* Pensacola Christian (w) 72, Georgia Northwestern 51: At Nashville in the Welch College tournament, Kiarra Parks scored 13 points, Alyssa Nichelson added 12 and Charron Woodley grabbed 11 rebounds for GNTC, a two-year school playing a four-year program.

* Freshman Erika Woodfin from Dade County scored 15 points and classmate Payton Smith from Sonoraville had 10 points and eight assists as the Reinhardt women's basketball team won its home opener this week, 75-70 over St. Thomas. Junior April Besley from Dalton High is another area contributor for Reinhardt, which takes a 1-1 record into today's game at Auburn-Montgomery.
