Area sports notes: UTC women golfers finish fifth

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golfers finished the 17-team Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational at Greensboro, Georgia, on Sunday in fifth place at 907 for 54 holes, six shots ahead of sixth-place Missouri. Nationally sixth-ranked Vanderbilt at 881 with Mercer second at 893 and Texas Tech and Kentucky tied for third at 896. In the unusual format of two days of 27 holes, the Mocs shot 299 in the split second round and closed with a 311. UTC's Kirsty Beckwith and Maddy McDanel tied for 13th and 19th, respectively, at 226 and 227, and Monica San Juan and Rheagan Hall shot 229 and 230.

Tennis

» The UTC men's tennis teams defeated North Dakota 7-0 and nearby Division II program Lee University 6-1 in matches Sunday at Baylor School. UTC lost one doubles match and otherwise just No. 4 singles against Lee's Antonio Pons, who also won in doubles with Daniel Prata. Niklas Gerdes, Tomas Rodriguez, Kerim Hyatt, Pablo Llebeili and Cooper Long each won twice in singles for the Mocs (6-4), and Simon Bustamante won 6-0, 6-2 against North Dakota and joined Hyatt for two No. 1 doubles victories.

Baseball

» Sewanee's scheduled third baseball game of the weekend against MacMurray was rained out, but the Tigers (4-1) beat the Illinois college 10-0 and 8-1 Saturday in Winchester. Trey Holland pitched a seven-inning two-hitter with 11 strikeouts, and thens Dalton Buckingham allowed no hits and struck out eight in five innings as part of a four-pitcher two-hitter. Jared Demkowicz homered and batted in four runs in the series opener and was 2-for-3 with four walks and five runs for the day Saturday, when Trey Akins was 4-for-8 with three runs scored and Chris McNulty was 4-for-9 and batted in three. McNulty and Riley Brandvold each had a two-run extra-base hit in game two, and Tyler Dunbar did likewise in the first game, when McNulty was 3-for-5 and Max Murray was 2-for-3.

Basketball

» The Sewanee basketball teams ended their regular seasons Saturday with Southern Athletic Association defeats of visiting Centre, the Sewanee men prevailing 77-67 over the league-champion Colonels (21-4, 12-2) after the female Tigers won 73-54. Cam Caldwell and Luke Smith had 19 and 18 points and four assists each for the male Tigers (19-6, 18-6), Caldwell with four blocked shots, while Michael Barry scored 14 points and Jordan Warlick had 11 plus seven rebounds. Kinsley Logan hit five 3-point baskets in scoring 19 points for the Sewanee women (10-15, 4-10), who got 10 apiece from Bella Taylor and Abby Young and eight rebounds and four steals by Taylor.

» Georgia Northwestern's men scored 59 points in the second half Saturday but lost 106-89 at West Georgia Tech, which is 14-8. Jeremy Wilson had four 3s and 24 points with six assists and Cole McKeehan scored 22 points with six 3s for the Bobcats (5-17), while Kannen Derryberry, J.T. Langford and Jarret Gill scored 14, 12 and 11. Jayce Harris hauled in 10 rebounds.

Lacrosse

» Dariana Blanton scored five goals and Emma Hill, Becca Broadwick and Shayna Ryan each netted three Saturday as the Lee University women's lacrosse team began its first season under coach Derrel Martin with a 20-17 home win over Erskine. Kayleigh Burns scored six for the Flying Feet.

» Martin's former program, Tennessee Wesleyan, also opened Saturday with a home win - 11-8 over Point - with five goals by MiKayla Virden and three first-half scores by Taylor Minauskas. Sydney St. Clemmons had an assist and two goals.

» The Sewanee women started their season with three wins in two days - in three cities in two states. They won 19-0 at Oglethorpe on Saturday and 18-10 at Birmingham-Southern and 18-2 at Huntingdon on Sunday. Grace Zechman had seven assists at BSC, including three in a three-minute span, and scored twice in each of the other matches. Mary Kate Myers had four goals against Huntingdon.
