Chris Rogers waited for his daughter to wake up from an afternoon nap she took on the way to Moccasin Bend Golf Course before opening his wallet.

It was stuffed with $1 bills.

"My daughter is going to putt for those dollar bills," Rogers said as Carlee wiped the sleep out of her eyes. "We have a three-foot circle, and today if she lag-putts it inside the circle she gets a dollar.

"Every dollar she earns goes toward something at Build-A-Bear. She's going to get in my wallet anyway -- I might as well make her earn it."

Rogers grew up playing golf and participated on the Whitwell High School team about 20 years ago. He passed the game down to Carlee, who will begin competitive golf tournaments later this month.

Golf is a sport they can do together now and play together 20 years from now.

"Seeing her get better every single time we come out here is amazing," Rogers said. "I have to plug away to shave one stroke. It's so neat to watch her improve every time."

Carlee can't quite beat her father yet, but that day is coming.

"I wanted to get a little extra practice to get the season started," Rogers said. "We come out as much as we can."

And as often as he can afford it.
