Sewanee's Shawna Laurendine was voted the Southern Athletic Association's first volleyball coach of the year for directing her first set of Tigers - all sophomores and freshmen - to a 14-11 regular-season record. Sewanee had gone 18-130 the previous five years. Tigers sophomores Jamie Sue Wilson and Kayla Sewell were second-team All-SAA selections, and freshman libero Jamie Kosman received honorable mention. Wilson, who's from Tulsa, Okla., and three-sport standout Sewell from Walker Valley High School were first and second in kills for Sewanee, which won its last five regular-season matches and 10 of its last 14 before falling 25-22, 25-23, 25-21 Friday night at the SAA tournament in Rome, Ga., to Birmingham-Southern (19-10). Caroline Montgomery led the Tigers with eight kills, while Rachel Schuman and Virginia Boyd had 15 and 12 assists. The 14 wins are the most for Sewanee since the 1999 team went 21-13.
• Heather Parman's 22 kills led the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team to its second 3-2 Southern Conference home victory in as many days Saturday - 25-17, 25-21, 19-25, 23-25, 16-14 over Elon (14-15, 7-7). Briana Reid had 14 kills and 28 digs, Bridget Camacho had 53 assists and 13 digs, Paula Passmore had 35 digs, Sarah Batterton had 11 kills and Melissa Green and Catherine Chason had 16 digs apiece for UTC (12-17, 6-8).
• First-place Bryan College won its regular-season volleyball finale 25-22, 25-10, 25-13 Saturday at Virginia Intermont, one of the teams tied for second in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. Chelsea Breaden and Carolyn Evans had 11 and nine kills for the Lady Lions (28-8, 16-2), while Taylor Fink had 30 assists and matched Breaden's 10 digs and Corrie Walker had 15 digs. Milligan beat Tennessee Wesleyan 3-0. The AAC tournament begins Wednesday in Kingsport, Tenn.
• Chelsea Van Dyk had 11 kills and Jessica Chittenden had eight as the Covenant College volleyball team defeated Rust 25-13, 25-13, 25-12 on Saturday. Steph Kirkpatrick had 26 assists for the Lady Scots (23-6).
• Cleveland High School graduate Payton Tipton had a team-high 17 digs as King College secured a berth in the Conference Carolinas volleyball tournament with a 3-1 home win Friday against Limestone.
Soccer
• The top-seeded Lee University women's soccer team breezed past visiting Belhaven, 4-1, in the first round of the Southern States Athletic Conference playoffs Saturday, but Lee finished its men's season by losing 3-0 at nationally seventh-ranked Mobile. Tom Halsall had six saves for the Flames (9-8-1). Ashley Aragona, Ode Fulutudilu, Leah Fortune and Chloe Woody scored for the No. 1-ranked Lady Flames (15-1-1), who will play Brenau in a semifinal Thursday in Montgomery. Fulutudilu, Fortune, Amy Cochran and Christina Bovbjerg had assists.
• Tennessee Wesleyan College swept its AAC soccer tournament doubleheader Saturday in Athens, the second-seeded Lady Bulldogs beating St. Andrews 4-2 and the third-seeded TWC men topping Union College 3-1. Josh Simnett, John Carrier and Ben Wilks scored for the winning Bulldogs (12-3-3), Carrier with an assist and Luke Winter with two. Abigal Fannin and Samaira Khan each had a goal and an assist and Britten Fandrich scored twice for the TWC women (11-7).
• Nathan Adams had a hat trick as No. 2 seed Bryan beat St. Andrews 3-1 in an AAC men's quarterfinal Saturday evening in Dayton. Jorge Gonzalez, Alan Da Costa and Gustavo Angel had assists for the 21st-ranked Lions (12-3-2).
Rowing
• Chattanooga Junior Rowing had two third-place finishes and three other top-10s in the first day of the massive Head of the Hooch regatta Saturday in Chattanooga. David May, Quinn Nash, Connor Nash and Michael Von Peters were third in men's junior quad, and Katie Crouse and Gib North were third in adaptive mixed double. The Head of the Hooch website has results of all the races.
Field Hockey
• Top-seeded host Rhodes College (13-4) beat Sewanee 2-0 on two early goals by Katie Faucher in the SAA field hockey tournament semifinals Saturday in Memphis. Anna Morrow ended her career for Sewanee (7-10) with a career-high 23 saves.
General
• UTC's interim athletic director, Laura Herron, will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without.
