Ron Lane top winner at Optimist strip

Ron Lane, owner of Ron's Classic Cars in Soddy-Daisy, won the $3,000 Super Pro first prize Saturday night at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip. He had to get past his wife, Eva, in the semifinals and then had a 4.79-second run on a 4.79 dial, at 148 mph, in his dragster powered by a 583-cubic-inch Chevy engine. Whitwell's Cody Holloway was second in a 1965 Nova with a 5.68 final run on a 5.68 dial. Bo Boatner from Scottsboro was the Super Pro victor in the strip's special Sunday edition with a 5.30 final dash on a 5.30 dial in his Undercover dragster. John Labbous Jr. was second, losing by inches with a 4.88-second run on a 4.88 dial in his 2010 Dakota pickup. Chattanooga's Michael Garner won the Foot Brake class in a 1956 Chevy Bel Air with Fort Payne's Ron Saferite second in a '71 Nova. Makenna Patterson of Section, Ala., was the Junior Dragster winner with Henagar's Megan Pritchett second. Don Garlits, the 81-year-old "Father of Drag Racing," is scheduled to be at the strip this Saturday.

• Ringgold resident Kevin Gibson won the Steel-head Limited Late Models race Saturday night at Cleveland Speedway. He led from the start, challenged primarily by Rick Hixson, but Dewayne Powell took second on the final lap and John Ownbey, Jerry Coffman and Bryan Pritchard finished third through fifth after Hixson lost ground in a spinout. Lamar Scoggins of Georgetown won the Crate Late Models feature with Jimmy Elliott second and Bobby Richey Jr. third, and Georgetown's Robbie Greene won in A-Hobby for the second time in a row with Glen Seaton III second and Jimmy Brown third. Patrick Wilson of Chattanooga was the B-Hobby victor, with Ronnie Kerr and Jason Brown second and third, and Knoxville's Michael Courtney was first with Danny Burnette the runner-up in Pony. Chattanooga's Daniel Burnette was the FWD winner with Kenny Kizzar second.

Golf

• The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golf team is tied for 10th in the 20-team Web.com Intercollegiate tournament after two rounds Monday at Marsh Landing Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. The Mocs' Agathe Sauzon is tied for eighth individually after two even-par 72s, and Jordan Britt is tied for 18th after a pair of 73s. Emily McLennan shot 154 on Monday, three better than teammates Isabella Loza and Porsche Campbell. UTC's 601 is 25 behind the first-place team, 14th-ranked Purdue, with 18 holes to go.

• The Lee University men's shot a first-day 291 and leads the annual NAIA Classic at the Brickyard Crossing in Indianapolis by a stroke over Grand View with Matt Emery in the individual lead at 70, Hunter Vest tied for fifth at 72, JB Eksteen at 73 and Florian Loutre at 76. The Lee women are two strokes behind leader Belmont in the Big Blue Intercollegiate at Old Hickory, Tenn., with Sloane Skinner and Madison Alexander tied for fourth individually at 79 and Courtney Shelton sharing seventh at 80. At 321, the Lady Flames are four ahead of third-place Lipscomb.

• Led by Levi Nix's 74, Covenant College beat Sewanee 318 to 346 in the Reeder Cup tournament Monday at Lookout Mountain Golf Club. The host Scots had the four best scores, including a 78 for Cameron Lewis, Scott McKnight's 81 and Trey Patterson's 85. Cole Parrish and David Spears led Sewanee with 87s.

Fishing

• Dan Clark of Cleveland was the co-angler winner in the Walmart Bass Fishing League Choo Choo Division tournament Saturday on Lake Guntersville with a five-fish limit totaling 25 pounds, 11 ounces. He earned $2,232. Hixson's David Freeman was third with 18-12, and Soddy-Daisy's Cody Frazier, Scottsboro's Trent Wright and Rainsville's Corey Stout were eighth through 10th with 17-2, 16-11 and 15-4. Fort Payne's Brian Horton was fifth among the pros with 24-14, good for $855. Gadsden's Terry Tucker won $4,463 for his first-place 30 pounds. Freddy Palmer of Estill Springs was 13th with 22-5, and Cleveland's Jeff Knight, Flintstone's Brent Barnes and Scottsboro's Benny Medlen were 16th through 18th with 21-12, 21-8 and 20-11.

Baseball

• On senior day for the Hiwassee College baseball team Monday, senior left-hander Matt Beard pitched a complete game in a 5-3 win over visiting Tennessee Temple. He struck out the last two batters in the ninth inning and finished with nine strikeouts, while Nikk Craig and Chris Large had run-scoring doubles. Chris Altman was 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Temple (15-14), and Brandon Blome had an RBI single.

Softball

• Bryan College won 6-3 and lost 13-11 in eight innings in Appalachian Athletic Conference softball Monday against visiting Union College. Shanna Chappell was Bryan's winning pitcher with Leighann Henry earning a save. Taylor Yates and Alexsa Valdes went 5-for-7 and 4-for-7 and scored three runs apiece in the doubleheader for the Lady Lions (14-18, 6-8), and Heather Daniel was 2-for-3 with a homer and two runs in the win and 2-for-4 with a double in the loss, when Katelyn Bowen was 2-for-3 with a triple, four RBIs and two runs. Jamie Cyrus hit three homers, including a grand slam, and drove in seven runs in that game for Union (11-21, 3-9).

• The Tennessee Wesleyan softball team is 17-15 after defeating Talladega 11-1 and 15-6 in two five-inning games Monday in Athens.
