University of Tennessee at Chattanooga seniors Manuel Barroetavena and Jenna Nurik are the Southern Conference's first tennis players of the week for 2013. Nurik is 5-0 at No. 1 singles for the Lady Mocs, who are 5-0 for the first time since 1991, and the Roswell, Ga., resident is 4-1 with Kaylene Chadwell at No. 2 doubles. Barroetavena, who's from Buenos Aries, Argentina, is 7-0 in singles for the 5-2 Mocs and 4-1 with Jackson Tresnan in doubles. Barroetavena, a Steve Baras Memorial Scholarship winner, began with four wins at No. 3 singles and since has added one at No. 1 and two at No. 2. The UTC teams host Lee University on Saturday at the Champions Club.
Baseball
• In a matchup Tuesday of two of the top three teams in the NAIA baseball poll, host and defending national champion Tennessee Wesleyan scored two runs with the help of three walks and a hit batter in the eighth inning and edged Lee University 4-3. Wes Minton was 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and two RBIs and Brad Carpenter was 2-for-3 with an RBI for TWC (4-3), while Brandon Rader was 2-for-3 and scored a run and Brady Renner and Karsten Strieby each was 2-for-5 for Lee (7-2). Strieby and Roberto Duran had RBIs. Brian Bardis was the winning pitcher in relief.
• The Gordon College baseball team jumped to a six-run lead and held on for a 6-5 win Tuesday at Cleveland State. Chase Edwards had the first RBI for the Cougars (2-2) with a single in the three-run fourth inning, and he hit a two-out double and scored on a Cody Hiefnar single (his second RBI) in the eighth to cut the gap to 6-5. Evan Speicher, who already had an RBI and a run scored, almost tied it with a single to center, but a strong throw nailed Hiefnar at the plate.
• Covenant College sophomore outfielder Scott Gillespie was the National Christian College Athletic Association Division I baseball player of the week after going 4-for-7 with a double and three runs scored in the Scots' season-opening doubleheader sweep of Berea College last Saturday.
Softball
• In the first season last year of Tennessee Temple's revived fastpitch softball program, the Lady Crusaders won one game. They equaled that total in their first day of the 2013 season, winning 4-3 in a game called for darkness after six innings after losing 5-4 Tuesday at Bryan College. Beka James was 3-for-4 in each game and Kamron Adkins was 1-for-2 with a two-run home run in the first game for Bryan, when Temple's Haley Huskey was 2-for-2 and scored twice, Ashlen Mitchell homered and Carley Daniel and Raven Pope each was 2-for-4 and combined for three RBIs. Pope was 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs and Huskey was 2-for-3 with two runs in game two, when Taylor Yates, Alexsa Valdes and Christine Marino each was 2-for-4 for the Lady Lions, Yates with a homer and two RBIs.
• Cleveland State opened its softball season Tuesday by winning 5-3 and losing 8-0 to visiting Snead State. Maura Ditto had two RBI doubles for the host Lady Cougars in the first game, when Sydney Howell and Emily Huston also had RBI hits and Kelsey Capella got the pitching win. Megan Honea pitched a three-hitter and hit a two-run double for Snead State in game two, when Mary Graves and Kyla Holland hit two-run homers.
Basketball
• With Paige Lowe scoring a career-high 28 points, the Sewanee women's basketball team ended a 12-game losing streak by winning 71-26 Tuesday at Welch College in Nashville. Jamie Chauvin added 11 points for the Tigers (6-16).
• Jenna Adams had 14 points and 10 rebounds, Julia Zimmerman scored 12 points and Hollie German combined six steals and six assists with 11 points as Lee University ended the Tennessee Temple women's basketball winning streak with a 76-50 win Tuesday at Temple. Zimmerman made four 3-point baskets for the Lady Flames (23-2), tied for seventh in the NAIA Division I poll. Amanda Rector scored 15 points and Amber Charles and TaQuasha O'Neal added 12 and 11 for Temple (11-14), which shot only 36.6 percent from the field and made 30 turnovers.
• Tavish Reynolds made seven 3s and scored 23 points in leading the Georgia Northwestern basktball Bobcats past four-year school Welch College on Tuesday at the Rossville Athletic Complex, 67-64. The host Cats trailed 24-11 but took a two-point lead into halftime and hung on for the win as Alex Miller blocked Jake Manning's tying 3-point try with four seconds to go. Manning was 5-of-9 on 3s and scored 27 points for the Flames (6-13), while Miller, Bud Todd and Richard Olsen each scored 11 for GNTC (8-17) in coach David Stephenson's 490th career victory. Hunter Ivester contributed 10 rebounds and three steals.
Golf
• Covenant College finished seventh out of 15 teams in the Coastal Georgia Invitational men's golf tournament that concluded Tuesday at Sea Island's Retreat Course, and the Scots' Trey Patterson closed with a 74 for a 14th-place 149. Daniel Jansen from team champion Faulkner was the medalist at 140. Covenant's Levi Nix and Cameron Lewis finished at 153 and 157.
Boxing
• The Red Bank Boxing Club will host a tournament Saturday evening with 11 teams from Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama represented at the Henry Luken sports facility.
