Kentucky freshman Katie Henderson from Silverdale Baptist Academy became the fifth UK softball player to pitch a no-hitter when the 17th-ranked Wildcats whipped No. 24 North Carolina 18-0 in five innings Tuesday in Lexington. Henderson is 2-0 in two five-inning starts with a 0.00 earned run average, complementing classmate Kelsey Nunley from Soddy-Daisy, who is 12-1 with a 2.02 ERA.
• The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's scheduled softball game against Boston University in Clearwater, Fla., was rained out Tuesday. The Lady Mocs are scheduled to play Quinnipiac there today at noon and may play another game.
• After winning the national championship in its final year in the NAIA last spring, the Shorter University softball team is 18-2 in its first year of NCAA Division II provisional membership, and players from Chattanooga-area Georgia schools continue to help. Freshman shortstop Kendall Johnson from Gordon Lee is batting .383 with two home runs and 13 RBIs, while senior third baseman Bre Johnson from Calhoun High is hitting .326 with three homers and 14 RBIs. Sophomore pitcher Maddie Bray from Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe is 4-1 with a 1.39 earned run average. Her loss came on a three-hitter in a 3-2 game Sunday against Union University, one day after she threw a no-hit shutout against North Alabama. A Bre Johnson homer was the difference in the Lady Hawks' 3-2 win over Union in Sunday's first game. Shorter hosts undefeated area rival Lee University today.
• Bryan College edged visiting Point University 2-1 and lost 5-3 in their AAC doubleheader Tuesday. Sarah Hundley pitched a four-hitter with no earned run in the first game for the Lady Lions (7-9, 2-4), while Jill Davis was 3-for-3 with a double, Taylor Yates was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run and Kirstie Jennings was 2-for-4 with a run. Jennings, Yates and Heather Daniel had the second-game RBIs.
Tennis
• The UTC women's tennis team has been given its first national ranking in the program's NCAA Division I era. The Lady Mocs, who take a 10-2 record and a 2-2 Southern Conference mark into a nonconference match today at Mercer, were 67th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's rankings released Tuesday. "This is a big accomplishment for our program," coach Jeff Clark said in a school release. "We still have a lot of work to do this season, but to see our student-athletes get recognized for their hard work is great for UTC tennis."
Golf
• The UTC men's golf team tied Kentucky and Houston for fifth in Auburn's Tiger Invitational tournament at Opelika, Ala., by closing with rounds of 301 and 302 Tuesday for a 54-hole 901 -- five shots behind second-place Memphis -- and the Mocs' Benni Weilguni tied for third individually at 218. Chris Robb shared 10th place at 223, while Davis Bunn, Liam Johnston and Steven Fox ended at 230, 234 and 236. Mississippi State won at 889.
Baseball
• David Lockwood's single down the left-field line scored Will Cleland from second base to give Covenant College a 9-8 win in the 11th inning of its home baseball game Tuesday against Piedmont. The Scots (11-3) won after having tied the score in the ninth on an error on a potential double-play ball, Lockwood racing home from third. He was 3-for-5 while Scott Gillespie was 4-for-5, each scoring two runs along with Cleland and Chris Rollins, and Perry Rigby had three RBIs for Covenant.
• No. 12 Lindsey Wilson edged third-ranked Lee University 6-5 in NAIA baseball Tuesday with three-run fourth and eighth innings. Leadoff man Leandro Perez was 2-for-4 and scored twice and cleanup batter Manuel Ozoria was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI for the 14-10 Kentucky team. For Lee (20-6), Brandon Rader drove in three runs and Josh Silver, Corey Davis and Jordan Stewart each had two hits and either scored or batted in a run.
• Bryan College lost 4-0 and 5-3 in a baseball doubleheader Tuesday at Campbellsville. Hunter Tipton was 3-for-3 and Joey Underwood was 2-for-3 in the first game for Bryan, and Blake Johnson had a two-run home run while Cody Rhinehart was 1-for-2 with an RBI in game two.
• Chattanooga State's scheduled home baseball doubleheader Tuesday against the Shorter junior varsity was postponed until today as one nine-inning game beginning at 1 p.m. Cleveland State's Tuesday doubleheader against the Tennessee Wesleyan junior varsity was canceled.
• Chase Brookshire from McCallie School pitched a complete-game three-hitter for Belmont University with a career-high 11 strikeouts last weekend but lost 1-0 to Southeast Missouri State.
Track & Field
• Tennessee Temple's Marissa Phinazee, a former Red Bank High School standout, was the National Christian College Athletic Association women's track and field athlete of the week for her two eighth-place sprint finishes at the Southern Invitational meet hosted last weekend by Birmingham-Southern College. She was eighth out of 60-plus runners in both the 100-meter (12.54) and 200-meter (25.98) dashes, in each case with six of the seven ahead of her from NCAA Division I schools. Teammate Adrian Martin was 15th in the 100. Sewanee's Clay Bond was eighth in the men's 1500, and fellow Tigers Tyler Wilcox and Hudson Robb were ninth in the 3000 steeplechase and the 5000 run, respectively.
