Lee sweeps TWC in basketball and other sports news

New NCAA Division II member Lee University swept NAIA Division II member Tennessee Wesleyan in a basketball doubleheader Saturday in Cleveland.

The Lee Lady Flames won 90-51 in their official opener, giving the Lady Bulldogs their first loss in four games this season, as Hollie German scored 28 points with 5-of-12 3-point shooting and Karley Miller and Rachel Lockhart added 12 points and three steals apiece. Jenna Adams was cold from the field, going 3-of-14 (1-of-7 on 3s), but had 12 rebounds, and Madison Lee made four steals.

Armeka Booker and Courtney Gobble scored 13 and 12 points and Cody Houck added 10 plus nine rebounds for Wesleyan.

The TWC men (3-2) got 21 points from Dante Turnipseed, 18 points and 11 rebounds from Tyler Burse, 16 points from Devante' Jenkins, 12 from Andrew Scofield and 14 assists and six steals from Shannon Smith but still lost by 20 points. Smith also committed 10 turnovers.

Corey Billingsley had 24 points and eight rebounds for Lee (2-0), while Tyquan Roberts had 13 points and freshmen Stedmon Ford and Jervon Johnson added 12 apiece, Ford matching senior Brice Sharp with four assists. Jay Marquette led the Flames with nine rebounds.

Bryan 58, St. Andrews 55: At Laurinburg, N.C., Robert Troino's 3-pointer at the final buzzer gave the Lions their second Appalachian Athletic Conference win in as many tries, 19 seconds after St. Andrews' Aaron Smith tied the score with a 3. Smith was 6-of-12 on the long shots in scoring 34 points, while Brandon Cole led Bryan (2-4) with 17 points and nine rebounds.

Bryan (w) 70, St. Andrews 63: The Lady Lions began the AAC sweep with Keila Formont scoring 19 points, Megan Billingsby contributing 14 points and 10 rebounds and Kristin Lane and Kelsey Brooks adding 11 points each. Brooks made eight steals.

Columbia State 70, Cleveland State 68: At Cleveland, the Cougars barely fell for the first time in seven games, as Justin Pride scored 20 points in the TCCAA doubleheader for the Chargers (8-0, 4-0). Cleveland State trailed by 12 at halftime but tied the game several times late. Keevin Tyus had 15 points, six assists and four steals in the loss, and Travis Wildgoose had nine rebounds.

Cleveland State (w) 65, Columbia State 54: The Lady Cougars matched their male counterparts at 6-1, 3-1 with their second TCCAA win of the weekend, as Brittany Ramsey had 15 points, 10 rebounds and four assists and Jamesha Mosley made four steals.
