Cleveland State adding 17 to hall of fame

The second class of inductees to the Cleveland State Community College Athletic Hall of Fame will be honored Feb. 15 at a brunch and the school's afternoon basketball doubleheader against Walters State.

The focus of this group is the rich 1979 and 1980 era in Cougars athletics, including the baseball team that finished second in the Junior College World Series. Diamond men being inducted are Billy Butler, Ted Carson, Tobin Davidson and Greg Geren, plus Ed Coates as an assistant coach in baseball and basketball.

Basketball players going in are Doug Armstrong, Rodney Benson, Charles "Bozo" Queener, Levi Scott, Karen Armstrong Clark and Tracey Dixon James.

Tony Cavett is being inducted for tennis, Bob McIntyre for golf, Norma Nelson for softball and Dr. L. Quentin Lane and the late Dr. George Mathis for administration. Mathis was Cleveland State's first dean of students, and Lane was the 1978-85 president whose name is on the school's gym. He later was commissioner of the statewide athletic association for two-year schools.

The other inductee will be Sherra Witt for meritorious service. She is a recently retired faculty member and dean of business and technology.

"I am really pleased that we will be able to build on last year's inaugural class," athletic director Mike Policastro said in a school release, "by adding those individuals who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in their collegiate and professional careers."

The Feb. 15 brunch is set for 10:30 a.m. at the Mountain View Inn. The inductees also will be recognized between the basketball games; the women play first at 2 p.m. For more information call 423-473-2271.
