The Chattanooga Football Club women took over first in the Women's Premier Soccer League Southeast Conference with a 3-1 victory over the Georgia Revolution on Sunday in Conyers, Ga.
The win was the team's fourth in five matches, after an 0-2 start. The club started off slowly, falling behind in the 20th minute on an Amanda Abbott penalty kick, but CFC responded 10 minutes later when Elisha Fry converted a PK to tie the match up.
They took control of the match with a pair of goals in a five-minute span. Kristina Heredia gave them the lead when she scored from a Nicki Gears assist in the 50th minute, then Heredia assisted former Notre Dame standout Blair Barker for a goal in the 55th.
For the third consecutive match, the CFC defense didn't allow a goal.
"We played too direct in the first half, but I felt like we inflicted death by a thousand cuts in the second half," CFC coach Patrick Winecoff said. "We're rolling now; the adustments we made after the first two games has taken hold and given us confidence. We showed a lot of character today to work our way back to steal control of the game.
"I thought our effort was great in both halves."
CFC (4-3) will host Knoxville Lady Force in the first half of a doubleheader Saturday, starting at 5.
CFC girls to nationals
The CFC under-14 girls won their age group in the Region III President's Cup tournament this past weekend without giving up a goal and will play in the national tournament July 10-13 in Greenville, S.C.
The team members are Lauren Barcelona, Lainee Bohannon, Avery Engles, Madelyn Ferrel, Arielle Fortune, Olivia Hoffman, Lily Hopping, Lindsey Hunkapillar, Renee Hutton, Julia Kaset, Lili Oren, Carly Pifer, Madeline Reap, Carmen Ross, Hope Sanders, Olivia Tawzer and Lynne Wright.
