Publinks match play for Patterson, Fox

Middle Tennessee State University golfer Brett Patterson from McMinnville and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior Steven Fox from Hendersonville advanced comfortably to match play in the U.S. Amateur Public Links tournament at Soldier Hollow in Midway, Utah. Patterson tied for fifth in stroke play Monday and Tuesday with a 4-under-par 138, and Fox shot 142.

UTC freshman Kory Webb from Knoxville shot 148 and missed making the low 64 moving on to today's round.

The Publinks champion earns a spot in the Masters if he remains an amateur until the April tournament in Augusta, Ga.

"Getting to match play was the first goal, because whether you're No. 1 or No. 64, you've got a chance," Fox said by cell phone after spending a couple hours four-wheeling in Utah. "I hit the ball well both days, but I had a lot of putts both days. Even par on this course is pretty good.

"My goal now is to take it one match at a time and play the guy I'm paired with."
