Dade County

Coaches and athletes in southeastern Tennessee and northwestern Georgia often lament the fact that there is very little in-season competition between area high school programs in the two states. The TSSAA and the GHSA are on different reclassification cycles, so scheduling interstate contests proves difficult.

TRENTON, Ga. — It was going to take a perfect situation to get Cole Hicks to leave his assistant basketball coaching job at Dade County High School. He found one this week.

Gordon Lee golfer Justin Hickman can boast, for the rest of his life, that he won a golf tournament in Augusta, Ga.

The biggest issue facing high school sports in more than a decade is still months from being decided, but if the Chattanooga area is any indication there is a clear consensus on the public-school/private-school debate.

On the surface all is quiet on the possibility of a complete public/private school split in Georgia. Behind the scenes is a different story and one that could play out over the next two-year classification cycle.

RINGGOLD, Ga. — Sometimes it just works out. Shane Pendley had an itch to scratch, and Ringgold High School had the perfect solution.

Dozens of high school golfers from the northwest Georgia area traveled south Monday, attempting to extend their seasons.

After down-to-the-wire regular-season races, Chattanooga-area high school baseball teams begin their seasons of no return this week.

As his players trotted into the dugout for their fifth-inning turn at bat, Dade County baseball coach Brent Cooper gave some obvious but sobering instruction.

Several playoff positions are still up for grabs in northwest Georgia as the regular season ends this week.

The injured mouth and dental repair for one player and the staples in the head of another eventually will be forgotten, but Arts & Sciences baseball coaches, players, administrators and fans never will forget the heart-felt hospitality and sympathy extended by host Marion County after two Patriots players collided during a game last week.

The halfway mark of the Georgia high school baseball region schedules is here, and little has been decided in the Chattanooga area.

CALHOUN, Ga. — It was only 15 seconds of playing time, but in those few ticks was clear evidence of why the Calhoun Yellow Jackets are celebrating their second consecutive Region 7-AA boys' basketball title following a 55-50 win over Model on Tuesday.

CALHOUN, Ga. — For years Glen Hicks' team has been the hunted in Region 7-AA, but when Dade County got off to a slow start this basketball season the reign was thought to be over.
