The hands were shaking and knees were knocking for several Chattanooga-area participants in the Ringgold Telephone Company Junior Classic on Tuesday.

Justin Hickman and Tyson Venable have played WindStone Golf Club at least 100 times between them, and maybe as many as 300, in their young lives.

Coaches and athletes in southeastern Tennessee and northwestern Georgia often lament the fact that there is very little in-season competition between area high school programs in the two states. The TSSAA and the GHSA are on different reclassification cycles, so scheduling interstate contests proves difficult.

Winning a state championship was not a requirement to become a finalist for the Scrappy Moore Coach of the Year award. But it certainly didn't hurt.

Four of the six finalists for this year's Scrappy Moore male Athlete of the Year award were multisport standouts, including one three-sport star. The finalists are Ringgold's Slade Dale, McCallie's C.J. Fritz, Baylor's Rafael Gaglianone, Dalton's Eder Mora, Gordon Lee's Jonathan Ragsdale and Meigs County's Levi Woods.

Gordon Lee golfer Justin Hickman can boast, for the rest of his life, that he won a golf tournament in Augusta, Ga.

New area Georgia head football coaches are Heritage's E.K. Slaughter, Sonoraville's Jim Kremer, Coahulla Creek's Chad Barger and Chattooga's Charles Hammon.

DALTON, Ga. -- Dalton High School soccer coach Matt Cheaves issued a challenge to his players before their Class AAAA state quarterfinal match against fourth-ranked Perry. Earlier in the day, he had read comments on a Georgia high school message board from a Perry parent stating that the top-ranked Catamounts weren't all that impressive.
