Ridgeland

All high school sporting events in the Chattanooga area were called off because of Tuesday's snowstorm, creating more scheduling problems on top of those caused previously by unusually cold temperatures.

There was a time when Ridgeland girls' basketball was annually mentioned among the state's best high school programs, culminating in the program's appearance in the state's final four in 2003.

Shane Turner had high hopes when he assumed the head-coaching duties for Red Bank's wrestling program.

The Chattanooga area is well represented in all classifications of this year’s Tennessee Sports Writers Association all-state football teams.

Barring appeal, Georgia high schools have been placed in regions for the 2014-16 academic years. In most cases with northwest Georgia athletic programs, the result is less travel and some new rivals.

Chattanooga was chosen over Des Moines, Iowa; Montgomery, Ala.; Normal, Ill.; Sioux Falls, S.D.; Spartanburg, S.C.; and Tupelo, Miss. to host the Amateur Softball Association/USA Softball 16-under girls' fastpitch national tournament in 2015.

CEDARTOWN, Ga. — For a moment in the second half of their Region 7-AAAA playoff play-in game at Cedartown, the Ridgeland Panthers began to believe an upset was brewing.

TSSAA kickoffs at 7 p.m. local time; Georgia games at 7:30

Ready for some extra football?

The last Friday of Tennessee's high school football regular season has numerous coaches changing their postgame rituals.

Storyline: The District 7-AA championship is on the line. Signal can take it with a win while Sequatchie would need to win and Grundy County beat Notre Dame to get it.

(Coaches are invited to make nominations. Send an e-mail to Ward Gossett at wgossett@timesfreepress.com by 6 p.m. each Saturday.)

If you know of a 2013 football schedule change, please notify Ward Gossett at wgossett@timesfreepress.com.

Storyline: This is playoff preparation between two ranked teams in different districts, but the same postseason Class 5A grouping.

With one round of playoffs to go before Georgia's high school softball elite convene in Columbus to decide championships in seven classifications, the usual candidates are representing northwest Georgia.
