Soddy-Daisy and Central win state titles

FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- Central and Soddy-Daisy brought high school state championships back to Hamilton County from the duals wrestling tournament Saturday at the Williamson County Agricultural Expo.

Central rallied out of a seesaw affair with Pigeon Forge to secure its second Class A/AA state title, 33-27, and Soddy-Daisy held off a frantic rally to fend off Cleveland 29-22 in the AAA final.

Soddy-Daisy needed a simple win to lock down the victory but instead got a pin from the newest member of the team, transfer Josh Deckelman. The sophomore 126-pounder got his pin with just 20 seconds left in the first period of the final match of the night.

Central also went to the final bout with sophomore 106-pounder Bryson Lemons taking the Purple Pounders from a 27-all deadlock to victory security, also with a pin.

Christian Brothers convincingly won the Division II title over Father Ryan, 41-22 decision.

Earlier in the day, Hixson and Baylor secured third-place finishes in the A/AA and Division II classes. Hixson cakewalked past Seymour and Baylor beat McCallie for the second time this year.
