DAYTON, Tenn. - Mallory Young knows that her Signal Mountain cross country team still has some work to do to be prepared for next week's state meet. But Thursday afternoon provided an opportunity for the Lady Eagles to celebrate a region crown.

As they've done for most of the season, Signal dominated its competition, this time at the Region 4-A/AA meet at Fort Bluff. Young finished second individually, with Central Magnet's Claudia Smith defeating the Lady Eagles junior by 30 seconds.

"We've never been region champions, so this is an exciting time for us," Young said. "I think we're in a good place right now as a team. We just have to close the gap in a couple of areas before next week."

Official results were not available as of press time, but unofficially the Lady Eagles put their top five runners in the top 16 spots in the race.

"I'm really happy, but I've been pleased with how the girls performed all season," Signal coach Kim Brown said. "This is a very close team, and part of the reason we've been successful is because they're so tight as a group."
