Chattanooga Lookouts' Brummett baffles Birmingham Barons

There were arguments between both managers and the umpires.

There was no disputing that Lookouts starting pitcher Tyson Brummett dominated the Birmingham Barons in Chattanooga's 4-0 win on a fireworks Friday at AT&T Field.

Brummett, a 29-year-old who played at UCLA, pitched seven innings and allowed three hits and zero walks and had six strikeouts. He lowered his season earned run average to 0.39. That's one earned run in 23 innings pitched this season.

Brummett had one difficult inning in the second when two singles and an error loaded the bases with one out. Then he struck out the last two batters in the Barons lineup.

Those strikeouts started a stretch of 17 straight batters retired. The streak almost ended with $25 million prospect Erisbel Arruebarrena nearly dropping a pop-up. He snatched the drop with his bare hand, then tossed the ball into the crowd from behind the mound. Rangel Ravelo, Birmingham's next batter, ended the streak with an infield single.

Chattanooga scored its first run in the second inning, giving Brummett all the offense he needed. Scott Schebler tripled to left-center field. He scored on a double to right field by Arruebarrena, who was thrown out trying to give Chattanooga back-to-back triples.

Chattanooga manager Razor Shines argued in the bottom of the first inning when Darnell Sweeney was thrown out at the plate. He likely questioned whether Birmingham catcher Kevan Smith blocked Sweeney's lane.

Birmingham manager Julio Vinas argued a few batters before -- when Sweeney stole second -- a more traditional safe-or-out call at the base. Both managers had their words before retiring to the dugout to watch the rest of Brummett's brilliance.

Chattanooga extended its lead in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Mayora and a two-run homer by Schebler.
