Margaret Champion

Margaret LaFaye Culver Champion passed away on Sunday, July 7, 2013.She was born in Midway, Ga., on May 17, 1924, to Jeneral Ernest Culver and Edna Grace McCoy Culver. Following the death of her mother, she spent most of her childhood years in the home of her aunt, Emma Culver Knight and uncle, Arelious W. "Clinton" Knight in the East Lake neighborhood of Chattanooga, where she attended the Second Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Margaret graduated from Central High School in Chattanooga in 1942. She worked as a telephone operator during World War II, with assignments in Anniston, Ala., and Miami, Fla. Returning to the Chattanooga area after the war, Margaret met and married Richard Champion in 1947. Career choices took them to Miami, Fla.; Birmingham, Ala.; and New Orleans, La., before returning to Chattanooga in 1968. Following Richards death, she moved to Warner Robins, Ga., to be near her son.At various stages in her life Margaret enjoyed sewing, quilting, working in a bakery, and cooking some of her own favorite recipes.Her parents, her Aunt Emma and Uncle Clinton, her husband of 40 years; and two brothers, J.E. and George Culver, preceded her in death.Margaret is survived by a son, Marvin (Pam) Champion, of Warner Robins; sister, Annette (Bobby) Davis, of Foley, Ala.; two brothers, Clawes (Barbara) Culver, of Rileyville, Va.; and Doyle Culver, of Oxford, Ala.; nieces; cousins; two grandsons, David (Kaylea) Champion and Stephen (Katie) Champion; and two great-granddaughters.Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, July 11, at McCullough Funeral Home, Warner Robins.Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2013, at Wilson Funeral Home, Wallis-Stewart Chapel in Ringgold.The family will greet visitors at the funeral home from 9:30 a.m. until service time.Interment will follow in Anderson Memorial Gardens, Ringgold, Ga.In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations to the Alzheimers Association, 886 Mulberry St., Macon, GA 31201.Go to www.mcculloughfh.com to sign the Online Registry for the family.McCullough Funeral Home and Crematory has charge of arrangements.
