Paul Swink Pearce Jr., 84, of Signal Mountain, passed away Sunday, April 22, 2012, in a Chattanooga hospital.He was born in Jackson, Tenn., raised in Milan, and had resided on Signal Mountain for the past 57 years. A 1946 graduate of the Sewanee Military Academy in Sewanee, Tenn. Paul entered Georgia Institute of Technology in 1947 following one year of studies at the University of Chattanooga and graduated from Georgia Tech four years later with a degree in electrical engineering and a Commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. He served in the 14th Engineer Battalion, 1st Corps, Eighth Army and participated in combat operations during the last fifteen months of the Korean War. In the winter of 1954, upon his return from Korea and subsequent Honorable Discharge, he was hired by the Tennessee Valley Authority as an Electrical Engineer, where he worked until his retirement in 1987. In 1954, he married Mary Katherine "Kay" Ogle at Centenary Methodist Church. Together they raised four children at their home on Signal Mountain.Paul was a founding and charter member of Signal Crest United Methodist Church. A past president of the Georgia Tech Alumni Club and the Chattanooga Society of Electrical Engineers, Paul enjoyed serving his Lord and his church. Over the years he served as chairman of the trustees and chairman of the Administrative Board, among other Volunteer duties.He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Swink Pearce and Mary Denney Pearce, of Milan, Tenn.Survivors are his wife, Kay Pearce, of Signal Mountain: children, Alan (Abbye) Pearce, of Chattanooga, John (Lori) Pearce, of Brentwood, Tenn.; daughter, Mary Lynn (Rick) Goins, of Cypress, Texas; and son, Lee (Anne-Hayes) Pearce, of Alexandria, Va.; brother, James Thomas Pearce Sr., of McKenzie, Tenn.: nine grandchildren, Brian Pearce and Lindsay Pearce, of Chattanooga, Erin Pearce, Kate Pearce and Ben Pearce, of Brentwood, Tenn., William Goins and Mary Kathleen Goins, of Cypress, Texas, Peyson Pearce and Mary Evelyn Pearce, of Alexandria, Va.; one niece and one nephew.Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 27, 2012, at Signal Crest United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mark Gooden officiating.Interment will be at the Chattanooga National Cemetery.Pallbearers will be Brian Pearce, Ben Pearce, John Maynard, Rick Goins, Will Goins, James Pearce.The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday April 26, 2012, at Chattanooga Funeral Home, North Chapel and Mr. Pearce will lie in state Friday, April 27, 2012 from noon until the time of the service at the church.In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those so inclined make donations to Signal Crest United Methodist Church, Signal Mountain.Arrangements are by Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist, North Chapel, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, TN 37343. www.chattanooganorthchapel.com.
