John Tippins Jr.

John Henry Tippins Jr. known by friends and family as Johnny Tippins, 83, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013. He was born in Gadsden, Alaa, to the late John Henry Tippins Sr and Thelma King Tippins. He was an Eagle Scout, a lifeguard and an accomplished athlete before entering college. Johnny attended college at Athens College in Athens, Ala., before serving in the Navy during the Korean War. After his service, he returned to college and completed his masters degree at Peabody Teachers College in Nashville. He was married for 61 glorious years to the late Inez Willis Tippins. Johnny's career was one of service to all the young people he encountered. He shared his love of sports and sportsmanship with everyone he met. He was a teacher, a football coach, a baseball coach, a Sunday School teacher, and a friend to many of the high school students he taught. From his first position at Hokes Bluff High School in Gadsden, Ala., to his last position at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School, he did his best to instill the values of hard work, teamwork and compassion with all of his students! After retiring in Catoosa County from the education field, Johnny continued serving his church, Boynton United Methodist Church and his community through the Boynton Lions Club. Throughout all of his life, though, Johnny never wanted accolades for himself. He is survived by two daughters, Susan Wooten (Jim Wooten) and Joanna McNew (Brian McNew); six grandchildren, Jennifer Maloney (Mark Maloney), Elliott Manning (Ashley Brown Manning), Andrew Wooten, Melanie Wooten, Brianna McNew and Katie McNew; and three great-grandchildren, Rory Maloney, Aiden Maloney and Blake Brown. Funeral services will be held noon Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, at Boynton United Methodist Church with Rev. Brett DeHart officiating. Interment will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. An online register book may be signed at Arrangements are by Wilson Funeral Home, Wallis-Stewart Chapel, Ringgold.
