Dr. John A. Hennessen passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at home in The Alexian Village on Signal Mountain.Dr. Hennessen is survived by his wife of 64 years, Yolanda Cacciatore from Floral Park, N.Y.He was a graduate of Tusculum College in Greenville, Tenn., and of New York Medical College. He was a member of The American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and a founding member of the Air Force Clinical Surgeons Society. During his life he was active for many years in training and teaching and was an Associate Professor of Clinical Orthopedics at the State University at Stonybrook, N.Y., and was an oral examiner in Orthopedic Surgery for 20 years for the American Board of Orthopedics. On graduation from medical school he served as a Regular Officer in the United States Air Force for twenty years and saw assignments at Andrews A.F.B., MD., Maxwell A.F.B., AL., Clark A.F.B. in the Philippines, and Wiesbaden, Germany. He also completed a year of fellowship in Orthopedic Pathology at The Armed Forces Institute of Pathology at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C. While on duty he attended the School of Aviation Medicine at Randolf Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. He became a Flight Surgeon in 1951 and a Chief Flight Surgeon in 1967. During his Air Force service, he received the Air Force Legion of Merit, the Air Force Outstanding Unit award, two Air Force Commendation Medals, along with Expert Pistol, and The Cold War award. In 1954 he became a licensed pilot and flew actively for years. After serving as Commander of The Medical Center at Wright Patterson A.F.B. in Ohio, he retired in 1970 and practiced on Long Island, N.Y. Later he served as Medical Director at the St. Charles Hospital Childrens Orthopedics Center, and for eight years as Medical Director of The Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove, Ill. With his wife Yola they enjoyed many happy years as residents at Pinehurst County Club and winters in Lake Ashton, Fla. In the later years he was a resident at the Alexian Village in Chattanooga.Memorial Mass will be 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2013 in the Main Chapel of Alexian Village on Signal Mountain with Father Augustine Joseph officiating.Entombment will follow the service at Chattanooga National Cemetery with full Military Honors.Condolences and memories may be shared at www.lanefh.com.Arrangements are by Lane Funeral Home, 601 Ashland Terrace, Chattanooga, TN. 37415.
