Gene Haffner watches a trio of cranes take off from the Hiwassee Refuge on Saturday afternoon. An estimated 3500-4000 birdwatchers traveled to Birchwood, Tenn., for the Tennessee Sandhill Crane Festival. According to Don King, chief of information and education for TWRA, this year's festival had the highest attendance yet.
