A union is a yankee thing. Southerners know how to stand up for themselves.

When the Unions first started out they were a good thing. But not today...I don't like the POWER they've become. We need good paying jobs in Chattanooga....NO unions. They will threaten to stage a walkout over nothing!!

VW pays a good steady living wage...we will rue the day the unions come in here!

Someone on here said "it was a Yankee thing" and I agree. Is this being started by the 400 Michigan workers at VW? They lost their jobs after demanding huge pay increases and ended up shuting down half of Detriot!!...Some were making $50-80 hr. and wanted MORE!!! How greedy can one get??!! Demands like that will close VW so fast it will make your head twist of!!

"Buy 'em books and buy 'em books and they just eat the covers!!!" When will they ever learn??!!

Union demands will raise the cost of living and cause higher taxes/prices on goods because now "since you're making such a BIG wage you will be made to pay MORE for gas/food/housing because you can afford it" if we need more of THAT idea!!

Why would anyone "NEED" a union, especially the UAW to speak for them? UAW only speaks for themselves. They get dumb people to listen to stuff like "your company president makes 'X' dollars a year", but forget to tell you the UAW president makes at least that. And who pays that guy? Union "dues" . Why does the union want IN at VW? Simple economics. Lets say each VW person makes 25K a year (and yes they make MORE than that, this is an example...) There are 2000 people. The union gets 2% of your pay for "dues" (They probably get more, but this is an example) -- that works out to 1 MILLION dollars a year! Why does the union need a million dollars of hard working Tennesseean's money? Why to pay the pensions and salaries of their yankee union bosses up in detroit. The union ruined everything they tried to do in the beginning. By the 1980's they had done a lot of good. But after that, labor freindly laws were more prevalent, and the unions had begun to have nothing to do. So, they tried to stay on by asking for more and more money. And then they promised senority, and defense of mediocrity. Some slug who comes in late, drinks on the job, and puts your life at risk, might not be fired if he's pals with the union leaders. Thats a fact folks!Unions wore out their welcome when greed took over. Saturn - gone. Pontiac - gone, Mercury - going, Oh wait? Wheland foundry right here in chattanooga. Yep the union "helped" them- helped them become outdated and run down by preventing the improvements that were needed to survive. Or Bendix in Cleveland - closed what, six years ago. Why? they couldn't compete with more modern factories - because they had a union! Oh, and you know - if the union were to go into VW - how many of the really nice benefits they have now, would be "negotiated away" so some lazy slob from up north can move here and take a job away from a hard working family value filled Tennesseean? union schmoonion - go home

A very very bad idea. I had to join two unions as a summer employee here during the early 70's. The time spent trying to game the system and plotting how to do the least amount of work for the most amount of pay was rewarded when those two companies moved most of their manufacturing offshore. The guys I worked with weren't bad people per se, they were just provided with too many disincentives to be productive.

I get tired of people saying how ignorant the south is. It usually comes from someone who only listens to the lame stream media.

As for VW going union, the union will only destroy another good place to work. Look at Detroit and the other places where car manufacturers were located. Slum districts. I was a union rep and vp for a number of years. I know what they do to good jobs. Keep the communist unions out.

Yeah, sure you were a "union rep and vp for a number of years." Did you get fired?

Union wages have provided me with a good living and put my son through college with a masters degree. I have good health care benefits and will retire with a great pension.

My union negotiates every five years with different companies and they have a good working relationship with the companies.

A shame that many people here in the South have such a low sense of self esteem that they do not feel they have a right to negotiate with a company for their sweat and toil.

Maybe some day Southerners will rekindle their rebellious spirit and stand up for fair wages, affordable health care, and an opportunity to have a comfortable retirement.

first of all this is a free country nobody makes anybody do something they do not want to do.what the previous negative comments posted fail to realize this unionization of Volkswagen is to be considered the new platform of union representation. with the German works Council type of relationship between employee and employer,Volkswagen has with every one of their other plants.this is the best way to do business.the Volkswagen Workers have decided that unionization can be a good call somebody stupid or ignorant because they want to be part of their employers system of collaborating with their employees.there seems to be way too many Monday morning quarterbacks making public comments without knowing all the facts.please keep your negative comments to your cells until you know what it's like to work 40 or 50 or even 60 hours building cars.
