The week-long renovation of the old Chattanooga Middle Museum Magnet School began this morning. The project, called “Bring It Together,” has paired 40 teams of contractors, designers and community volunteers to redo the inside of the nearly 80-year-old building in preparation for its reopening this fall as Normal Park Upper School.

The owner of a local firing range and gun shop says his classes are overflowing and handgun sales are up. Figures for 2007 show about 8,000 Hamilton County residents had permits to carry handguns. Police, gun owners and an instructor comment on the increased interest in firearms.

The Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority will hold a public hearing on July 10 to discuss proposed budget cuts for the financially strapped transit agency. CARTA will have to consider cutting evening, Saturday and Sunday fixed-route bus service, closing its electric shuttle service or some combination of the two, said Tom Dugan, the agency’s executive director.
