David Uchiyama is a sports writer at the Chattanooga Times Free Press who began his tenure here in May 2001.
His primary beats are UTC athletics — specifically men’s basketball and athletic department administration — and golf, which includes coverage from the PGA Tour to youth events. He also covers other high school sports, outdoor adventures, and contributes to other sections of the newspaper when necessary.
David grew up in Salinas, Calif., and began working at the Monterey County Herald in the fall of 1995 when he was a junior in high school.
He spent five eventful years at Indiana University as a journalism major. In that time, he worked for the Indiana Daily Student as the sports editor, football writer, men’s basketball writer and held other high-profile positions before getting hired in Chattanooga.
He was an intern at the Cincinnati Enquirer in 1999 and helped cover the Reds and other sports. In 2001, he was an intern at the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, where he assisted with coverage of the NBA, the Vikings, and the PGA Tour. He also received intensive training at the Associated Press Sports Journalism Institute in 2000 and was a speaker at an Investigative Reporters and Editors annual conference in 2001.
His list of awards include honors from the Hearst Foundation, the Associated Press Sports Editors and the Tennessee Society of Professional Journalists.
Golf, fly-fishing and outdoor-related activities occupy David’s free time, in addition to work on his first house in Red Bank.
