Chattanooga: D-II East track delayed till today

The second half of the Division II East region track meet, postponed by Thursday’s steady rain, will conclude today at GPS, beginning at 5 p.m. The field events and 3200-meter run were held Tuesday, with McCallie leading the boys’ competition and GPS taking control in the girls’ meet.

With the Spring Fling rapidly approaching, another prep sports year is drawing to a conclusion. And while there are still state champions to be crowned in Murfreesboro next week in baseball, soccer, softball, tennis and track, it will also mark the end of spring football.

The Warriors scored five runs in the bottom of the first off three walks and two McMinn Central errors, chasing the Chargers’ starting pitcher before he had recorded an out in Wednesday’s Region 3-AA championship game.

Jay Fullam, a two-time all-state defensive back for McCallie School, has committed to play for Vanderbilt University. The 6-foot-1, 190 pound Fullam also had offers from the Naval Academy, Air Force and Northwestern and was being recruited by Tennessee, Alabama, Auburn, Florida and LSU.

At the reverberating sound of aluminum contact, Aja Medina took one quick look to find the ball and bolted for home. By the time Shanda Barnett’s sharp grounder to second was fielded, Medina had crossed the plate to complete a dramatic seventh-inning rally and give Whitwell a 3-2 win over Sale Creek for the Lady Tigers’ second consecutive District 6-A softball tournament championship.
