I'm glad to see this opinion piece. I know it's a complex issue, Moving back to Chattanooga after years away, I'm having a very hard time with certain aspects of the culture. The fact that more than a dozen police officers stood by while the beating happened is horrible. I kept wondering why there wasn't a bigger response ( I watched the video), as in police cases in LA and NYC, I moved here from a big city, and I feel a lot less safe here. But I'm glad this ugliness is coming to light, and that some people have the courage to speak up about it. Just tell me one, one reason anybody ANYBODY should be beaten like that.
I couldn't believe the front page of yesterday's paper; a friend reminded me that yesterday was the last day of Black history month. Somehow I was under the mistaken impression that Tennessee was one of the more progressive Southern states, before I moved here two years ago.
