This is MOST DEFINITELY human error! The Army Corp of Engineers has lied to the people MANY, times before and they are doing it again!(When you practice something for a long time, you most generally get really good at it!) If you aren’t directly affected by this (or previous) flooding, it is very easy to not do the ‘homework’ and believe what the Corps is telling you. The Corp knew in March and April, how much snow fall was in the Montana and mountain regions, and it was A LOT! They supposedly 'allowed' for all of that. YET, it didn't seem to be a problem then, as they were running the water levels low enough that we could see sandbars. We NEVER see sandbars in March and April when the water level is at the “normal” higher winter levels. So, Montana gets 8 inches of rain within a two week period. Now they tell us that that 8 inches of rain is causing flooding of this magnitude! PLEASE! Eight inches of rain will NOT cause this much flooding! Twenty inches of rain wouldn’t create this kind of a flood! Then, we have the bird situation, but that's another story. But I will tell you that just days before the Corps announced this flood publicly they were STILL holding back water to allow machines already placed on the river to build sandbars for the birds! Now those sandbars, which have cost us taxpayers thousands of dollars, are under water, too! Like I said, if you aren’t directly involved, you’re likely to believe what they (the Corps) are telling you.
I can tell you story after story of the lies the ACE have told; stories of their 'hidden agendas, but that is for another time! And for those people who say we assume risks by having homes and businesses by a river..PLEASE! YES, it can be risky to build homes and businesses next to rivers, oceans and lakes that have NO flood control. But we have the best flood control in the world! We have 6 DAMS (in our area). Isn't that why the US spent millions of dollars on these dams....to PREVENT flooding? C’mon! It doesn't take much of a brain to see that someone really messed up!
When my 70 year old parents were offered flood insurance (which btw is VERY EXPENSIVE) my Mother told the agent that "we have the best flood insurance possible. We have dams!" She went on to tell the agent, "If ever we have a devastating flood along this river, it will be the result of human error". BOY....was she right! Incidentally....flood insurance typically applies to natural disasters, NOT man-made disasters! Just think of the money they and many others COULD'VE paid for flood insurance, only to be told, "Sorry..this doesn't apply"! I believe those "experts" at the ACE who are responsible for this tragic mistake need to resign as soon as possible. My 70 year parents without an engineering degree could have managed this better than they did! There are thousands and thousands of people who are now without homes, businesses and their livelihood. Many will never recover. I sure hope the "experts" can sleep at night!
