It does seem like a bad week for the signal mountain community. BUt comming on this forum and blaming the police and then the newspaper for doing thier jobs in my opinion does nothing to help your cause. In a couple days this will be old news and someone else will be on the front page. Deflecting blame from the responsable parties or in this case party goers shows a lack or accountability on the part of the deflecters. I am sorry they got caught. I wish no ill will toward anyone. But it happened. Now go to court pay the fine pick up some trash if the judge is so inclined and move on. This will be just a bump in the road for these students and hopefully they will learn to keep it down when they get on the college campus so they don't end up in the busted paper just like all the other weekly arrests for underage drinking on any campus near you.
gjuster.... I have read many of your comments here and you seem to always articulate your positions in a thoughtful/respectful way and I wanted to say thank you for that. You seem to be a rational person who wants what is best for each of us. But then the paper loves to quote Mr West as a representative of the Tea party so I was wondering if you were a part of the same group. Mr Wests article to the chattanoogan read in part: First, I was troubled to hear the judge, the President and other activists citing “solid scientific evidence” as the reason to arrive at this decision. What was missing though in their reasoning or conclusion was something that should always trump science: ethics or morality. Then Yesterday when referring to the golf match he had this to add: Just because they have 'Senator' in front of their names doesn't mean they're entitled to a better understanding of this nation than folks in Tennessee," West said. "We know there's absolutely no common ground with Obama."http://www.timesfreepress.com/newhttp://www.chattanoogan.com/2013/5/6/250605/Plan-B-How-the-Courts-And-Obama-Molest.aspxs/2013/may/08/senators-golf-game-tees-off-tea-party/?local .... You can read several other dubious quotes in the timesfreepress article from other tea party leaders so I was just wondering your opinion, being a apart of the Tea party, are these quotes part of a platform being developed by the tea party or are these just individual opinions that the Timesfreepress chooses to quote as representative of the group?
Thank you leaf you and rumrunr are both correct. There is no room for error when you are a public figure. And in no way was I trying to justify any of the actions taken by any party involved. My issue was with the innuendo in the article. Hinting at something more, writing as if this man got away with something when in fact he will be punished for the rest of his career and the feeding on peoples mistrust of police in general that struck me as wrong. I understand this is an editorial but Mr Cook reaches a large audience and I would hope in the future to see an OP ED showing the charity work/volunteer work that the police are involved in as opposed to the red meat he seems to offer to like minded individuals.
When I think about social issues such as gay marrage plan B abortion I keep comming back to the same question when trying to form an opinion. From where do I get the authority to decide? Because if I have the authority then that makes me superior. Well I am just a man. I do not have the authority to decide how others live so that is the starting point to forming my opinion. Abortion.... I don't have a uterus so I won't have one. Gay Marrage.... I won't get one but if you want one go for it. It doesn't effect me...... Plan B......condoms break it might come in handy.... But the last thing I will do Is stand up and demonize any other human for the choices they and they alone will have to live with. Karma has a way of teaching us humility and often times it has a way of shaking one's personal world view along the way. So tread lightly MAXIMUS
Absatence only education....no birth control pill coverage...no plan B.... so when that doesn't work......no abortion....now that there are more mouths to feed..... cut medicare....cut headstart...reduce food stamps..... Is this a platform I am supposed to vote for?
Mr Cook , chttp://www.tennesseecriminallawyerblog.com/2008/11/purchasing_alcohol_for_a_minor_1.html If a person is convicted of Class A misdemeanor Purchasing or Providing Alcohol to a Minor, he or she may be sentenced to up to eleven months and twenty-nine days in jail and a fine not to exceed $2,500.00. Additionally, persons convicted under this statute must perform at least one hundred (100) hours of community service work........
Now compare to the following punishment..Hammond suspended Tabor's pay for 132 hours, put him on probation for a year, removed his duties as a patrol officer and reassigned him as a correctional officer, which means he works in the jail (most of the time withouta gun) instead of the streets and loses his patrol car, powers of arrest and a big chunk of pay.I would say that 132 hrs of pay would be equivalent to 2500 for a deputy and givin our local courts any of us without previous apperances would be granted a suspended sentence/probation for 1 year so that seems equal as well and lastly this officer has to live with his mistake everyday as he clocks into the jail instead of being on the street doing what he has spent years training for. I believe that would be the worst part of the whole thing. Knowing that each day he has to go smell that smell and be surrounded by the violent hate. Now I know nothing of the people involved nor had I heard of this instance before reading your piece but something about it bothers me. I have read many of your works here and it seems that most of the time you are trying to help people. Bring them up. You beg for second chances for gang members, join task forces and tend to listen and offer help to the weakest among us. Then you write about the police and your tone changes. I will not defend this man's actions but a little journalistic restraint might be in order. Squeeky breaks and allegations of police brutality..... Racial profiling of hispanics.... good ol boy treatment by the sheriff... these are a few that come to mind. You have the bull horn and the police take the bulls..t. They take it everyday. They do the things we cannot, willnot. Then you use your talent to write about the slightest appearane of impropriety. In this instance you have eluded to statatory rape and coercion. Both felonies. Of course you didn't use those words but you left this reader with that impression. Wasn't that the point? Sensationalizing without the liable? So please Mr Cook, go on that ride along, learn what these officers go through everyday and maybe just maybe you could write a peice on the good that they do. After all they are human too.

Who controls the media......http://www.nowfoundation.org/issues/communications/tv/mediacontrol.html......5 controling sources for all the mainstream information available........Now look at the political contributions of each of the 5 and the picture starts to come into focus....it goes something like this....Corp A donates to a political party/candidate in the hopes of favorable legislation. The "news arm" leads with stories of how good said legislation is including favorable coverage of politicians who sponser the legislation. It also demonizes the opposition. This is rewarded by access to "leaks" and "unnamed sources" from the government for reporters who toe the line including nice trips and invitations to press briefings for the chosen few. Now the politician has to buy airtime for his reelection using the money donated to his campain from the parent company. And the cycle starts again.
One thing to consider when posting about biased "news" coverage is that there are 24 hrs a day to fill. So even though it is on FOX doesn't always make it a "news" show. Most of the comments here use editorials from variouse sources to bolster an arguement but an editorial is an opinion not a fact.It may contain facts but that does not make it always truthful. Sometimes it is difficult to see the difference so like IKE has stated listening for recurring key words is a good start. Also folks like Hannity Maddow Mathews are editorialist (corporate prostitutes) towing the company line. They are paid to fain outrage and to twist every event in the world to fit a preconcived narative. Most networks have an agenda. Don't be so naive to say that one has a monopoly on misinformation. A good starting point would be to research the parent companies of each network and follow the money......
