Ironically, in the past year, the No. 1 complaint from readers who called to talk about the paper — on any subject or about any story — is that the Free Press page was not conservative enough. Some readers were turned off by the page’s support of gay marriage and polygamy and legalized prostitution and marijuana...... Socially liberal and physically conservative would describe Mr Johnson's views. He is part of the emerging Libertarian wing of the Republican party. The more socially conservative aspect of the party would be the religious right/silent majority that has held sway of the primaries for far to long. Their power is waning and it is not a pretty sight. Simply put, the republican party needs to get out of the private lives of voters and stick to monetary issues. True physical conservatism will, by its own merits, attract voters. While demonizing the lifestyle choices of others will repel potential voters. If you want a monotheistic party stick with the old guard and go the way of the wigs but if national relevance is the goal ( and winning elections) then a more socially tolerant view will be required. In order to know if you are tolerant of others when confronted with any social issue simply ask yourself : who decided that you get to decide? Are you your brothers keeper? Or can your fellow man live their life as they wish while you live yours the way you wish. When you answer that basic question you too can lean toward Libertarianism.
The choice is between Christie and Paul or old guard and libertarianism. Christie is positioning himself to be the inside guy doing the same things our last two presidents have done, which is to print and spend more money. Christie will continue the same policies the Republacrats have been promoting for the last 16 years while campaigning as a moderate conservative with fresh ideas. Rand Paul, like his father before him, scares the hell out of establishment republicans who fear they will lose control of their gravy train : defense spending. So perhaps they are getting a head start on derailing his ambitions. This little tiff is good for both party establishments and the status quo but bad for those who would hope for change during the next election. The abortion talk won't start till the midterms.
Mr Cook, Unless something has changed in the last couple of years TN fishing licenses expire on Feb 28th. You can buy them anytime but they expire on a set date, so I don't know how Jon Doe's expired 2 days before July the 4th. Unless you didn't verify his tail or just threw that in for compassion's sake. Also on federal land without ID breaking the law? Near the damn? In a post 9-11 world the officer of the peace is to just mosey along. At a time when granny gets a pat down at the airport 4 unidentified males should be left alone at a major piece of infrastructure on one of our most important holidays......ahhhh huuuu I see. Add this one to a long list of articles demeaning law enforcement. Squeeky brakes.... driving while brown... (did you ever do that ride along?) Would it not be better to petition your lawmakers to make exceptions to the fishing without a license laws to allow for anyone to do it? I enjoy the articles you write when you are trying to give a hand up to the less fortunate but this is simply red meat to your admirers, not an exposé on social injustice. Keep fishing Mr Cook , there are real acts of racism out there and with a little more journalistic effort you should be able to find them.
jesse... we got a rainout on the hike and my girlfriend was to tired so im sittin here bored trying to pass the time
chet says....BECAUSE YOU HAVE NOT BEEN AROUND BLACK PEOPLE......WE HAVE OUR UNDER-CLASS JUST AS YOU HAVE YOUR UNDER-CLASS....THE DIFFERECE IS THE MEDIA HIDE YOUR UNDER-CLASS...WHEREAS WITH BLACK AMERICA THEY PLACE THEM ON THE FRONT PAGE......
This is a good observation. When folks leave the suburbs and go to work in the city they drive past many run down areas and they see a snapshot of street life through a preconceived lens. A reaffirmation of their world view which is poor urban blacks. But what doesn't happen everyday is that these same people do not drive trough the trailer parks and see the poor whites sittin on their porches with their kids. So the urban poor are more visible to the suburbanites than the rural poor which reinforces the stereotypes when comparisons are made. Now no one on here is telling me I'm responsible for cleaning up the white community so how can you demand that a black person do something to educate/change the social standing of another black? Also in a rural community it is rare to see a police officer on a daily basis where in the city there is one patrolling at all times. I see them several times a day sittin on my porch but when i'm outside the city you only see them when you call for them. So inside the city you have a much greater chance of being stopped which leads to higher incarceration rates in an urban setting. It is simply playing the odds. Now add in the mistrust of the police in an urban setting coupled with the attitude presented to the police from a frustrated populace and you get two completely different outlooks pertaining to our justice system and the communities as a whole
You’re saying that to get a real idea of how Black culture standards are in variance to non-Black standards and have a “fish out of water experience”........
.....Several of the previous posts had alluded to Mr Martin's appearance and demeanor. Or how a person should dress to hail a cab. Well, no one gave me the power to decide how someone else should dress or walk so I just concern myself with me?. As far as a fish out of water you could substitute the 23rd st bilo if youd like but the bar setting or the restaurant setting is better because it is social. Chattanooga self segregates. Those of us who try to integrate are met with skepticism and disbelief both from white and black. If you would like to see for yourself get in your car and go from Harrison bay to glass st without getting off hwy 58. We live in two different worlds and most of the people doing all the fussing haven't ever left the south. It's not like this everywhere.
As far as Travon has it occurred to anyone here that the guy may have been lost? Dark raining first night in a new place and talking on the phone. He may have been looking at those units trying to figure out where he was staying. Circling back because he pasted his row. I wasn't hiding in the bushes or in Jesse's kitchen so I will not speculate further as to what happened but to suggest anyone here knows anything about what happened is a waste of time and energy.
Would any of you like a hint as to what is like to walk in someone else's shoes? If you truly believe what you post ,that blacks can/should somehow live up to YOUR standards, why don't you spend an evening at Mocha. When you walk in you may well be the only nonblack in the room. Walk straight to the bar look the fellow in the eye and order a drink. The entire experience may be refreshing to your world view and your pallet. If there is a Jazz band at Mocha it may become your new favorite hangout. But make sure you dress to impress , we wouldn't want the door man to turn you away! Do this and have a small taste of what it is like, if only for a moment, to be a minority away from your comfort zone.
It is also a victory for singles every where! No longer will hedrosexual men miss out on the tax reduction gravy train. We can now get married without the fear of a bitter woman taking our lively hood due to irreconcilable differences. Finally I can get a tax write off by marrying an unemployed/underemployed friend. Heck we might even get an earned income credit since we will now have 2 mouths to feed. This will help offset the tax burden all singles incure when we pay a little extra to put your children through school. And I can stick it to my corporate master by getting my new partner on my health plan at a much better rate than he/she could have gotten on thier own. I can also rest assured that the gov will now have to pay me survivor benifits if I outlive my spouse. All this without the fear of an oops baby! It's a strange world we live in when the issue of gays getting married brings tax equality into the conversation. I can not think of any reason the government is in the marriage business or for that matter why the tax laws are so complex but if someone out there will say "I do" then sign me up!
While I don't see much hope in curbing the outcome of people already falling through the educational system I can see the benifit of pre K. If for no other reason than the parents that have abducated thier responsability to thier own children. This ties in nicely with a call of tax reform to stop rewarding the breeding habits of the welfare class. Simply breeding for a tax credit and a larger voucher has led us into an unsustainable model and to ignore it allows it to fester. You can talk jobs but who wants to hire a highschool drop out? Volkswagons largest complaint is not enough educated workers in this area. So if it will indeed take a village to raise a child then lets agree that it must start at an earlier age. By starting and expanding pre k programs we can get a person involved in these childrens lives that will show them what stability is. Someone who says "good job" and "way to go " to a 2-3 year old is someone who can reach into poverty and show this child what hope and love are about. By the time these children reach 1st grade it its too late. They have been exposed to ignorence and blight from day one and are already repeating the pattern of failure that these breeders are exposing them to.
