This article should be taken very seriously. Because of ads, kickbacks and the like, depression medications are being overly and unnecessarily prescribed. As a National Certified Counselor, I am always amazed how a family physician can determine that a patient is depressed without proper mental/psychological diagnosis. Then they easily prescribe a medication without thoroughly explaining the negative side effects. The system has also caused people to look for the "quick fix" to cure their depression. I have news for them, medication is not the answer. While medication helps with they symptoms, it does not help with the causes like emotional abandonment, abuse, low self esteem, etc. The real treatment is in some form of counseling and therapy.
