And as for the racist and classist remarks that get get bandied about on the comments sections...I think we as Chattanoogans need to be brave enough to confront the racism and classism that very much exists all throughout our city. We should denounce it and correct it at every turn, but we shouldn't put the lid back on it. Closing the forums would do just that.

This is a bad move. The interactivity between the reader and the story and the between the readers themselves really opened up possibilities and made the Times Free Press experience viable in the world of social media.

Turning off the comments sections eliminates that interactivity and makes the TFP less competitive in a Web 2.0. This'll hit your revenues too as fewer people may end up going to the website.

I really enjoy having a good newspaper here in the Scenic City and I think its important that we support the TFP...but these kinds of decisions will not do much to stem the tide of increasing irrelevancy of newsprint.

@Wilder and others;

Please, make a point that's substantial. Arbitrary laws respecting arbitrary borders are hurting very real people. Look at the reasons why Latin Americans are coming to America and when you get the real answers you'll know where to assign the blame. The economic policies of the US and the behavior of multi-national corporations have destroyed local markets thus causing Latin Americans to flee to where the prosperity is. And that's right here.

If you lived in the kinds of places that Latin Americans live in, where the economic and social conditions are desperate, I doubt you'd follow the onerous and needlessly complicated system of immigration because you would want the best for you and your family.

Unfortunately, I'm afraid that most of you, even if you were confronted with the facts, wouldn't care. Like Pharaoh of Egypt, your hearts are hardened and you will not hear the truth because it means that you would have to give up shamefully-privileged lifestyles based on GREED.

You think I'm being harsh? Look at yourselves! You pridefully uphold a system of laws that would destroy families and rape the weakest among us because you yearn to believe that they are the cause of your economic woes. Why you all are so eager to blame the least of our brothers and sisters is beyond me. Maybe its because you know that going after the real enemies, the worshippers of Mammon, would cause you "discomfort".

Every person on this thread who is not outraged at the needless separation and destruction of this family is lacking in empathy and, thus, is less than human.

I concur. Let's do away all illegal immigrants! I'm sending out a letter seding my apartment and property to the Cherokee Nation; plus, I'm contacting the Irish embassy for re-patration papers.

Get over yourselves folks. Unless you are Native American YOU are ALL illegal immigrants. Take your Euro-trash selves back to the Fatherland.

And go take your hostility out on the people who put this economy in the shape that its in. These children didn't take away your 401k's, they didn't lay you off, and they're not the ones that caused the banking system to collapse. Looking for villains? Open the Wall Street Journal. They're usually lauded as "successful businessmen".

Or better yet...continue your ways. Keep blaming the wrong people. Keep blaming the weak and the powerless and the least of your brothers and sisters. You DESERVE to lose your job, your 401k and your standard of living. Just remember...it gets better.There's a day set aside for you...

"And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity."

NoMyth, I agree with you. Republic Parking is a pitiful and unnecessary monopoly that hurts downtown consumers and deters potential consumers from doing business. I can't find any reason why their continued monopolistic hold on this vital aspect of the downtown economy needs to continue.

At best, I'd advocate for city-held parking spaces. Revenue could be used to fund moves towards more public transportation.
