How about focusing on the root cause? You know the one about the appalling lack of mental health resources that is a crucible for generating mass shootings. Every incident with the exception of Gabby Gifford was in a gun free zone. Every incident was committed by mentally ill people.

Bravo! A rational, coherent and practical discussion that can bring both extremes together to solve this horrific issue!

Kudos also to Joan Garrett's very well written and researched article. Lets try to be part of a solution, instead of exacerbating the problem.

Thank you ,

What about the other part of Obama's speech ... the part where he conceded the is a problem with mental health resources in this country?

Have you ever seen what happens to a family that has a high functioning special needs child reaching the age of 18?

Pulitzer Prizes go towards leaders in journalism, it is obvious this paper is more interested in sensationalism and muckraking rather than exploring and defining issues that cut across all social stratus.

When will the media focus on the real issue?

Reagan destroyed mental health care system in the United States because of budget problems. We are reaping the results of that decision. There are graver budget problems today ... banning firearms will not solve this problem.

The underlying cause for EVERY mass shooting in the last decade has been mental health issues.

So, the media has taken it among themselves to let a collection mentally ill people rip apart the Constitution and destroy the fabric of our society.

Isn't it obvious that a heavily promoted gun-free zone attracted this mentally ill individual to "leave his mark on society?"

You meet force with force. A trained school resource officer and several well trained school personnel such as those with military background will be more effective in denying the insane their quest for infamy.

TFP has an image problem. What is apparent to many readers are the lack of journalistic integrity, hidden agendas and utter contempt TFP espouses as their first amendment right to "create" sensationalistic stories that lean more towards malicious gossip rather than sound journalistic reporting. The difference is laying out the facts rather than creating plausible scenarios.

A wise friend once told me, "You hate in others what you despise about yourself". Self deception is the greatest obstacle to truth. The harder I tried to prove that axiom wrong, the clearer the inventory that emerged. Pointing a finger at someone or something also means there are three more fingers pointing right back at oneself.

The more convinced of how righteous one is, the greater the blinders of denial.

What separates a great journalist from a mediocre reporter? It is not the person writing ... rather it is the culture of the organization and the management that provide the foundation for greatness to emerge.

Change comes from within. Not from external influences.

Does the TFP really expect its readers to believe this tripe? The efforts to demonize and marginalize Sherriff Jim Hammond are well documented within your tomes. Now the costs incurred from the results of those actions are impacting the operations of your organization.

Part of the consequences of adopting the role of a bully is accepting and acknowledging why some people are urinating in your sandbox. Playing the victim role won't get you respect or results. Did you learn anything? Are you going treat the next sherriff the same way?

Expecting different results from the same behavior is a definition of insanity ...

Why is the liberal media focusing on guns? The problem is not guns and the subsequent gun-control laws. The real problem is mental health and it's lack of popularity among the politicians.

From the Ronald Reagan era to now, the biggest cuts have been in mental health programs. We are now seeing the results of that. With this deranged individual's knowledge of chemicals, this could have been easily done with an IED or truck filled with explosives. The devastation would've been much greater and the loss of life would've been horrific.

Law abiding citizens may possibly make a difference if they were allowed to have a firearm on their person. However, it is widely known they are not allowed in theaters, like several other places such as bars. Did not stop him to prop the exit door and go out to arm himself.

A crazy deranged person will not obey any law, regardless of penalty. So let's ban all firearms and let the crazy people proliferate and find more effective ways to gain fame. That makes sense ...

I saw the race card pulled out above and cannot believe the tiptoeing around this issue. A black Chattanooga police chief released several articles over the past few years depicting an ugly truth. The majority of crimes are black on black. This IS a race problem ... not a white on black or a black on white problem.

The only time I see the NAACP come out is when there is a percieved white on black attack. The hordes and media press conferences ensue making sure EVERYONE hears about it.

NAACP = National Association for the ADVANCEMENT of Colored People.

Why aren't the black leaders and community coming out and attacking this problem enforce? Why aren't they calling media conferences organizing neighborhood watch programs? Why are they not attacking the roots of these problems? There is no more government money, that never worked. It will take action, like the Million Man March. It will take leaders like Martin Luther King. It will take mothers and grandmothers like Rosa Parks who will stand up and say, "ENOUGH is enough!" I know the church leaders are doing their level best. The politicians only come out when "the man" makes a mistake and pull the race card. Whitey can't do it because of three hundred years of horrible race relations. We now have a black president, we have black politicians with influence, black judges, black lawyers, black policeman ... ad infinitum.

This is not a gun problem, it is a race problem. Black attacking other blacks. The reasons are endemic and the only way they can break this escalating cycle is recognizing there is a problem with gangs, drugs and broken families that permeate and perpetuate this cycle. Fear and retaliation paralyzes those who try to make a positive impact. Why is that?

For the record, I am not racist. I am horrified and saddened to see this cycle perpetuate itself with no end in sight.

Directions would be nice, I don't know where the landmarks in the article are located.

The webpage has no map or directions either ...

So, where is it?
