Laughing Boy, I can see that you are clueless on this subject. Other employees from the other facilities refer to us as the 'mountain mafia' and call us every name in the book from rednecks, to goon squads, etc. But buddy let them have a boy that they can't make any progress with and guess what, he's on the next bus to Taft! And, even more remarkable is that many times they gain a few points on their IQ scores. That's because Taft is not designed to house MR offenders. So, like the other poster told you, maybe you had better go find another topic to post under since you obviously have not a clue about this issue. After all, NO ONE can teach MORALITY! Now, I've said all I need to say about your uninformed comments. Have a nice life.

I have never neen known for holding back, that's for sure. And I'm gonna divulge a little more information for the world to know. For MANY years, the powers that be have been trying to close Taft for a variety of reasons. Most of the reasons were based on unfounded allegations of prejudice. That is BS! If anything, Taft employees have been the victims of reverse discrimination because of those allegations, and some of the higher ups in Nashville made no secret of the fact that they would close us. Most of them are too chicken $hit to even come to Taft because of all the lies. I would put the staff of Taft up against any other state institution when it comes to helping people out whether it's a co-worker, a parent, a visitor, or a child in custody. Who else can say that? There is an endless list of the kind acts displayed by Taft employees, but I guess that doesn't count anymore than the clients we serve. As the saying goes, they may win the battle but end up losing the war. When this happens, I'm gonna have to say "YOU WERE WARNED"!

Yea Haslam and O'Day, screw all of the loyal employees who have given their whole lives to the welfare of our youthful offenders and the State of Tennessee. We are being treated like a wad of chewing gum on the bottom of your $400 dollar shoes! I have no respect whatsoever for you or any of your minions! You have listened to NOTHING ANYONE has had to say, you have condoned all the lies and fuzzy math, and your method of opeation sickens me beyond words. The day will come when you will pray that you have Taft back and the employees who have made it what it is. I hope I get to see this day. I feel like our state is being run as a dictatorship, and your actions and lack of forethought prove it! Enjoy all your big paychecks Nashville, because the day will come when all the corruption and dirty politics will rear their ugly heads. Guess what you are gonna look like? The f-ing idots that you have proven to be. Oh, and for the other state employees who have failed to speak to Taft employees through all of this, you can go elsewhere. It's your turn next and it WILL happen. This administration has got to make its money through privitization, off the backs of the lowly taxpayers. Get ready for crime to rise, more detention centers being built, institutions being destroyed and people getting hurt because it is coming. Hope the powers that be can sleep at night because it will be on them!

While I haven't got a rocking chair just yet, I sure have been barking at the top of my lungs and will continue. I also think it's pitiful that the Nashville news is just pretending like this is not an issue! This is the first time I can EVER remember them not jumping in the fray when DCS had issues, and I've got a pretty good memory. The administration is operating under the the old concept of 'if we pretend like it doesn't exist, it will go away'. Things don't 'go away'! Talk about putting a big black eye on Tennessee, this is going to make every Tennessean look like an idiot. The end result is not going to be pretty and we all need to hope and pray that someone will come to their senses and put a stop to this crazy, ill-planned, lack of sense move that will close Taft!

I read today where Bill and Chrissy stopped by the Morgan County Regional Correctional Facility. Wasn't that so gracious of them! I'm sure they were on their way back to their mansion in Knoxville. It's a shame they can't take time to stop at Taft, but they are too chicken $hit for that! What a bunch of selfesh, incompetent, (HASLAM AND CABINET)we have leading our State. I'm moving!

Excellent article Mr. Cook! There is one very important component that I would like to emphasize to anyone who is reading this editorial and the comments. TEAMWORK plays a major part in Taft's ability to do so much with so little. If the employees at Taft didn't have the teamwork, loyalty, cohesiveness, and dedication that it does, we would not have the outstanding results that we have.

We try our best to lead by example, at least to the best of our ability. For DECADES now, we have recieved little to no support from our 'leaders' in Central Office. They have been trying to close Taft for a number of years, and because the powers that be think now is the time to strike, they are doing just that!

As I have said all along, this move will impact the students we serve, but it will have every taxpayer in a choke hold. Why? Because of the privitization, the greed, and the lack of knowledge so many of our 'leaders' seem to not have. Not only do they not have the knowledge they need, they have NO desire to learn anything. When they were asked about their 'fuzzy math', it was like "oh well, we lied" and that was OK. Well, it's not OK and it never will be!

If this administration doesn't wake up and smell the coffee, Tennessee will sink faster than the titanic did. I've always been taught that the best indicator of the future is to take a look at the past. Well, looking at the past, there was another administration that got in on the ground floor of privitization (CCA), and those former DOC/DYD/DCS have made tons of money! And with what they are doing, this will continue.

Also, I can honestly say we have had more support from our state representatives, senators, and juvenile judges than we have our own professional organization TSEA or Tennessee State Employees Association! I'm sure TSEA has an inside track on what is to come in the future. And for the other juvenile facilities, you had better fasten your seatbelts because if they get rid of Taft today, it won't be too long until they set their sites on you...Wilder, MVYDC, and the ones in Nashville that seem to be so problematic!

I've always said that one can't think using logic when it comes to government in Tennessee, and I believe that more now than ever before! I can only hope and pray that something, somewhere, somehow will ring the bell that wakes up the powers that be who appear to lack sense enough to get in out of the rain.

Here we go again....taxpayers getting screwed without benefit of a kiss. Kids victimized AGAIN like they have been most of their lives, and employees getting beat down in the dirt for being dedicated, caring, loyal, and excellent in the jobs they do.

Yea, way to go Haslam, O'Day, Dawson and company. How do you ever sleep at night?

One other thing that O'Day failed to mention yesterday. Regarding bed capacity and how low the institutions are, she didn't mention that the county detention centers are bursting at the seems with offenders waiting on a bed. I guess she is just letting them get used to how it will be IF they do close Taft. Yea, the emphasis will not be on treatment, it will be on bedspace. DISGUSTING! As they say, some folks don't have the common sense God gave a toad.

Oh, and another thing. Employees at the other YDC's had better get ready because they WILL have their hands full. IF they close Taft, that is yet another disruption in a teenagers life, and most all of us know how well that goes. I never realized how fareaching my sympathy could be, but I do now.

Prayers going up for our students, DCS employees, taxpayers, and our society as a WHOLE. This is going to get really bad, really quick.

O'Day and company have been warned about what is to come if this ill conceived plan is executed. There will be a lot of casualties and the collateral damage is already so great it can't be measured I'm afraid!

This administration is perplexing to me. I was at the Legislative Plaza yesterday for this hearing, and if I had a dime for every LIE, every 'I don't have that information in front of me', and outright denial of facts, I would be a billionaire. O'Day was so unprepared I had to ask myself HOW and WHY is she in Haslam's cabinet? O'Day herself, the big child advocate is missing the whole point. This is about treatment and rehabilitation of youthful offenders not MONEY. All she cares about is privitization and padding her pocket when her tenure with the State ends. Haslam, O'Day, Dawson and company are clueless about Taft Youth Center in so many ways! For YEARS, we have been targeted for closure. We have always done the most with the least amount of resources than any other YDC in this State. Why? Because we care!

If they are going to use dollars to justify their actions, the very least they could do is use TRUE, ACCURATE numbers. They stated that building costs are $300+ per square foot. I have checked, and that is a LIE. Building cost average between $125.00-$150.00 per square foot in Tennessee. Now unless they are using gold in the beams, I just don't see how they got these figures. I cannot for the life of me understand why Taft is always being victimized by the powers that be. Is it because they believe we are only capable of the 'mountain mentality'? Is it because of things that were alleged to have happened oh so many years ago? Or is it because if we are out of the picture, they makes it easier to go to the 'privitization' model? Yea, DCS tried that once upon a time, and it FAILED! I guess O'Day and company are unaware of that as they are so many other things about the department.
Taft measures up or exceeds any and all demands placed upon us by the powers that be. We are constantly scrutinized moreso than other facilities, but we take that in stride and continue to do what is asked, directed, and mandated. We do it without delay, comment or negative reactions. Even though we are all human beings, we are often treated as much less. Personaly, I'm so sick and tired of all of the lies, fuzzy math, vendettas, and discrimination. Taft has one of the most experienced work forces in this state and I feel because of this, that is more reason to target our closeure. There are fedreal laws that protect us on that avenue, but who is going to protect the youthful offenders that we serve? If our own administration can't protect these individuals, then please tell me who will? The losers in all of this are the students and the taxpayers. They can say closing us will save all this money, but you just mark my words. By the time they take our students, place them in less secure facilities, and then foot the bill for all the destruction that comes as a result of this ill thought out proposal, the cost is going to be in the tens of millions!
