Ladd apparently takes her marching orders from good research, the prevailing opinion of educated economists from both parties and common sense which is sadly lacking in all the above comments. It takes great guts to follow the best interest of the people when silly, non-sensical attacks are aimed at anyone trying to take a moderate and responsible stance. Too many years of crazy defense/ homeland security spending and tax exemptions for the ultra- wealthy caused our problems. You can paint her judgement whatever way you want but the data proves you VERY wrong...
This morning, Valentine's Day Rep. Blackburn was on national TV opposing both preschool for all and the raising of minimum wage to a living wage. In her embarassingly stupid reasoning regarding preschool, she quoted a local teacher who shared her opinion that it was just too much paperwork. Had all the other industrialized countries of the world and many of the rising third world countries ignored the long term research which pairs early education and long term financial well being and over-all societal health the world would be in shambles. Surely a bit more time on paperwork is worth securing a person's longterm ability to find adequate, life sustaining wages. At that point they would be fully contriibuting, tax- paying members of society.
Blackburn's thinking on this issue is insulting to the people of Tennessee. Her comments on minimum wage were equally as inane.
Do you think her voting record has more to do with choosing the plan that has the least paperwork than what is truly good for Tennesseans?
In both Newtown and Aurora as well as Tuscon , the shooters had histories of mental illness. Had we, the available and informed mental health system, support for families of the mentally ill and a ban on the selling of assault weapons these events would not occur. We must be brave and take a chance on reforming our gun laws and fully supporting our mental health system. We need strong, smart and compassionate leaders who will look logically on all the data regarding guns from other world governments. We need women and men who are able to rise above emotional responses fed to them by a gun industry intent on manipulating simple minds.
Mr. Smallwood is unable to logically and non- emotionally respond to this issue. Name calling and insulting does not make his response correct.
The Chattanooga Times endorses Pam Ladd for District 3
